When I compare the early seasons to now, to me there's been a decline in quality, but not such a significant one that I can understand this attitude. Go watch season 1 again, it is not as perfect and easier to take seriously as you remember. Of course I love early SPN, but there's a reason it took me a while to get really into the show. It's kind of embarrassing to watch sometimes, it's still one of the best shows I've ever followed and kicks most network television in the ass, the end.

I marathoned the hell out of this show once season 6 was running and maybe as a result of that I don't have a lot of the same opinions most of the fandom seems to have. Like that s1 and 2 are the best (tbh I found it hard to get into, like you said, and I... didn't find it scary at all. Not even Bloody Mary and people think s1 and 2 are by far the scariest?
I found the living teddy bear the scariest tbh) and from 4 on it's a steady decline in quality. It just went in a different route but it's not gotten that awful in my opinion.Also I didn't get really attached to the Winchester brothers being the solo main characters in their MOTW show like most of the older fans probably are because I didn't watch it one episode at a time.
I like the show for its willingness to step into plots, like the angels, and... Heaven, and just picking up random folklore to make a monster out of. Not many shows seem to do that nowadays. So even if it sometimes comes off hokey and awkward, this show is much more refreshing than many other shows out today. To me, that is.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-23 12:50 am (UTC)(link)What's interesting to me is a lot of people who talk about the HUGE decline in quality are also HUGE Cas fans, and I just think, "WTF, Cas wasn't even in the first few seasons? Don't you enjoy the later seasons at least a little if Cas is your favorite?"
Same thing goes for if they like Crowley or any other recent angel/demon.

This. Supernatural takes on themes I like seeing different takes on (basically, the supernatural.) As long as they keep doing that I will still have an interest.
