IA.

I mean, people like what they like, and that's fine... But I just can't see the appeal of her... Neither the book nor the movie version. :/

Just chiming in with some icon love. <3

I don't like Bella but I love HBC, she seems a funny and original woman and she's a good actress.

[identity profile] immortality.livejournal.com 2011-09-24 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I suspect this is why people love Bella, tbh: because they love HBC.

I never understood either.

[identity profile] philstar22.livejournal.com 2011-09-24 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
For me, it is the same appeal of any villain: I don't love them because I think they are good, I love them because they are good at being evil, because they are interesting characters, or because they are enjoyable to read about.

[identity profile] atanvarne-lj.livejournal.com 2011-09-24 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Where do you stand on Umbridge? Just asking out of curiosity. In many respects, Book!Umbridge was scarier than Voldemort.

Bellatrix is the Sirius who might have been. She fascinates me for that reason alone.

She's a horrendous person. I don't know how people are supposed to like or sympathize with Bellatrix. She is actually, 100% fucknuts crazy. And in love with a mass-murdering psychopath. Sooooooo.

But IA on HBC, too. I'm kind of sick of her (and Tim Burton, for that matter).

[identity profile] atanvarne-lj.livejournal.com 2011-09-24 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
You might consider watching HBC in something not directed by Tim Burton or a Harry Potter film. She was great in The King's Speech and I loved her in Fight Club.

[identity profile] matitablu.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I was getting a bit of HBC fatigue too to be honest, but I agree with the above poster - she was really good in The King's Speech and with a character that is not her usual type (which is kind of ironic since she started out with James Ivory, so in a way that's closer to her origins than any Burton film).

I really only like book!Bellatrix, and not because I think she's an awesome person or anything.

I'm alright with HBC, but I think she's sort of overrated as an actress.

[identity profile] frozenish.livejournal.com 2011-09-24 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I like her as a character, but boy did I cheer when Molly killed her. Good villain imo.

Same, honestly. I just don't get it. Oh well.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-24 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's some sort of id-fulfilling thing. Bella has no restraint, she's all rage and lust and craziness. I imagine that can be satisfying for some people to read about. I am pretty neutral on her. She definitely had a purpose to fill in the books and she did it well. Her death scene was great.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-24 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
She's crazy. Crazy characters are often popular.

[identity profile] murderershair.livejournal.com 2011-09-24 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't like, sympathize with her or anything, but for a while there she was one of the more unpredictable characters, and that's always fun. And then when she got predictable, it was basically because she's guaranteed to be over the top at any time, which I think is hysterically funny.

[identity profile] sindragosa.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I think, deep down, Bella has fans because a special sect of them want to believe that they are "like" her (ie- confusing her crazygonuts for ELOEL!RANDOM!) and find "kinship" with her character. *shrug*

[identity profile] hako-neko.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
She's a batshit villain with over the top expressions and body language-- what's not to love?

[identity profile] hoopyfroodyford.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
She's fucked up beyond belief. I don't get it either, anon. Just what she did to the Longbottoms alone... it makes me sick.

[identity profile] allinye.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. I really don't find her interesting. She annoys me more than anything.

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
I don't find her particularly interesting, tbh.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-25 08:31 am (UTC)(link)
In the movies I've seen her in (besides HP) I've enjoyed her performances and I can appreciate her quirkiness. It's sometimes refreshing to see from all the other celebrity women out there.

[identity profile] van.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 09:52 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. She's just so one-note and boring and uninteresting to me. I was shocked when HBC performed as Hermione during that polyjuice potion, because I learned in that moment that she can actually act/play something than "unstable crazy woman." I suppose it's not entirely HBC's fault; I generally just really hate characters like Bellatrix.

I just liked seeing her complete lack of restraint. Doing whatever she wanted to, whenever she wanted, and being so gleeful about it (movie example being her smashing the Great Hall) - not a character I identify with or approve of outside of her role as a villain, but there's something fascinating to me about characters who have so few boundaries.
