To you, it might be a goofy-ass hobby.

To me, it was the way I found out I loved writing and experimenting with creative themes, and trial-and-error when it comes to what makes a story be good or bad/have well rounded characters/cliche or have a better use of common themes of the genre/etc.

In other words, twelve years of fanfic and all of the brutal honesty of internet critique that comes with it gave me better training as a writer than four years of education at a university ever would have.

Couldn't have said it better.

Yeah, this. I'd just add that even if you're not doing it as practice for original fic, what's wrong with building on past stories anyway? Yeah, the audience is smaller, but you can tell a lot of stories you wouldn't be able to otherwise, because fiction inspires.

And there's some amazing fanfic out there.

Exactly this. And not every writer wants to become a published author. Fanfiction gives a lot of writers the avenue to express their creativity without having to write a novel. Nothing wrong with that!

Can't it be both that, AND a goofy-ass hobby?

Or rather. Isn't it better when it's both serious and a goofy-ass hobby? I mean, really.

Honestly, NOW it is both for me.

But before I got to a level where I was very comfortable with my writing quality? Nope. It was serious for me, because I always wanted to improve and I always felt like what I was writing was shit. (and looking back, most of it was)
