To you, it might be a goofy-ass hobby.

To me, it was the way I found out I loved writing and experimenting with creative themes, and trial-and-error when it comes to what makes a story be good or bad/have well rounded characters/cliche or have a better use of common themes of the genre/etc.

In other words, twelve years of fanfic and all of the brutal honesty of internet critique that comes with it gave me better training as a writer than four years of education at a university ever would have.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-24 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh god yes, and the social justice policing that goes on there too, it's poisoning fandom slowly but surely. Can't do this, can't write that, such-and-such is objectively bad and should be seen as a fandom-sin. One day the amount of self-righteousness sumgness is going to implode in on itself and the whole site will disappear up its own ass, leaving fandom to recover its creativity, Joie de vivre, and freedom to explore, again. That day cannot come soon enough.

I think you're wrong. Writing, no matter what, is a creative task and it hurts no one. It could be worse.

Besides, authors in RL have been writing fan fiction for ages. Dante wrote RPF with The Divine Commedy. A guy named Avellaneda wrote the second part of the Quixote some years before Cervantes did it. There are at least three written different versions of Don Juan. House is an AU story of Sherlock Holmes. "Sense and sensibility and zombies" is a fic. It's everywhere. The only difference is that we don't get money for that.

This "goofy-ass" hobby has been a mainstay of literature for longer than the internet has been around, OP. How many of Shakespeare's plays for example are based on history, folklore, legends? What about current books like Pride and Prejudice and Zombies? What about damn near every writer at Marvel or DC? What about Neil Gaiman who's Marvel 1602 venture could very easily have fallen into "AU Fanfic" categories if not officially published?

So here's a thought, after all that. Who cares? If these people at AO3 want to create a safer place to post fic (and if they do, they might want to rethink their necessary warning system), why does that bother you? It seems you're pointing a pretty hypocritical finger at these "pretentious" people when you're doing something pretty similar to fic writers in general. "You're not doing something right/I deem important/in the way I like, so you're wrong!" Get over it.

tl:dr? If you don't like it, don't got to the site.

[identity profile] math-camel.livejournal.com 2011-09-24 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm going to sit over here chuckling superiorly. At everyone. Because I can.

[identity profile] sandvich.livejournal.com 2011-09-24 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my god, these comments. I like to write fanfiction sometimes too. It's fun! It lets me indulge myself! It's a cool way to share my ideas with people who like the same things I do and to practice other writing skills that I can use when writing original fiction, school essays, or stories for my campus newspaper and magazine.

But it's still a fucking goofy-ass hobby, you guys. And I'm pretty sure that nobody's Watson/Sherlock slash is ever going to end up on the level of Hamlet, or even the level of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Just admit that you have kind of a silly hobby and move on.

I write fanfic, and I read fanfic, have done for more than a couple of decades now, and I love that it is a goofy ass hobby. That description is a feature, not a bug. That OTT seriousness which screams, and screams pathetically, "take me seriously" is such a horrible fandom cultural cringe. I celebrate my goofy ass hobby, for all the goofy, fun, freaky, and fantastic thing that if is.

"just a goofy-ass hobby"

So are sports. But people beat each other up over that crap.

People get invested in their hobbies. And at least to me, the occasional academic discussion actually adds to the fun.

You know, I wonder if amateur singers - those who sing karaoke, or sing for their family or friends - are considered people with goofy-ass hobbies? Or, for that matter, cover bands. People who work hard to create music, often putting new spins on old classics, sometimes taking things to extremes either way.

Really, how is that different? Someone toiling away hours, days at a time at a labour of love for little to no money. Some people do it for the chance to rise to fame, to hone their talent and maybe someday release their own creations into the wild. Others still do it because they just love the music, or even the sound of their own voices.

I sincerely doubt that they are looked down upon in the same way fanfiction writers are.

Just a thought.

This "goofy ass hobby" helped me come to terms and then explore my sexuality. Let me find characters that I could actually identify with (mostly, it took The L Word to give me a "not able bodied" (Deaf) gay character). It helped me deal with my depression and self-injury as a teenager.

So yeah, I read a lot of "goofy" stories (like the one I read recently where Jane and Maura get stoned and play Mariocart, or the one where SG-1 is quaranteed for a month and hilarity insues). So a lot of it is just for shits and giggles (like getting drunk and posting high res caps of SGA episodes with accompianying (sp?) commentary). But it's also more than that. And it's more than that for a lot of people. So sometimes, I like to turn my brain off (to a certain degree), and sometimes, I want more than that.

[identity profile] ninety6tears.livejournal.com 2011-09-24 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Some of us like to try to make something that actually has some kind of affect on other people, and some of us are profoundly affected by what we read and see in fandom, and I don't see why that's worth ridicule or why we need a daily serving of self-mockery to necessarily have any clarity about the difference between fandom and profitable work.
It's as silly or as serious as any one person wants it to be for themselves. I wouldn't call somebody else's hobby that they devote a lot of work and time to "goofy" and I'm not going to treat myself any differently.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-24 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay I've been trying to figure out what bothers me about this whole thread. I do not care if you think what I'm doing is goofy, this does not bother me in the slightest and I am not surprised.

But don't try to convince me to think what I'm doing is goofy, because it is just not going to happen. I'm not going to "admit" anything, I'm not trying to pretend it's more than it is ... I care about it, because I care about it, and that is that! Live and let live :\

Oh i also hate the general elitism of AO3, OP.

[identity profile] lemon-m.livejournal.com 2011-09-24 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Fanfic can be very goofy, yeah, but like it or not it's part of our storytelling tradition. It's not a 'just'; depending on the person, it can always be more.

[identity profile] allstarzs.livejournal.com 2011-09-24 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)

*shrugs* I use AO3 because I like their interface for uploading my largely pointless but harmless and fun fanfiction. Couldn't care less about their politics - they made a tool that's useful and available to me free of charge, so I use it.

I guess I'd be more concerned about whether I agree with their general belief system or not (I haven't looked into it enough to know) if I was paying them or something. As it is, I just appreciate the fact they made something cool and let us use it.

[identity profile] dragonladyk.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
If by "goofy ass" you mean "an activity engaged in by a statistical minority in comparison with the general human population" then yes, fanfiction is indeed a goofy-ass hobby.

And I like it that way: no real names, no legal weight, no money -- under the table and mostly in the dark.

I like that I can write sorcery-using slash porn and even if it magically became the most popular thing on the internet my name isn't on some list of royalty payers for some columnist to find and feature and now suddenly my pastor knows I write homoerotic fanfiction in my spare time. I like that when I'm being interviewed for a new job, my potential new boss doesn't even know what fanfic is most of the time, much less has an opinion on it, and most certainly can't find out what I write even if he/she did have an opinion. Because if fanfic is legal and registered and shiz, you know employers are going to see what you write just like they check your Facebook profile for racy pics that don't fit their "clean corporate image."

So, yeah, no. AO3 does not speak for me, and it pisses me off that they think they do.

I like it in the dark with my goofy-ass hobby that completely lacking in real-world complications.

PREACH ON, OP. PREACH ON.
