I write fanfic, and I read fanfic, have done for more than a couple of decades now, and I love that it is a goofy ass hobby. That description is a feature, not a bug. That OTT seriousness which screams, and screams pathetically, "take me seriously" is such a horrible fandom cultural cringe. I celebrate my goofy ass hobby, for all the goofy, fun, freaky, and fantastic thing that if is.

95% of us write fanfiction because it's goofy and silly and fun, even if the story is the angsty angst that ever angsted an angst. I'll be the first to stand up and say, "Hale no, I ain't no author. I'm a hack!" but I'm a hack having fun doing something I enjoy, and even if the rest of the world thinks it's dreck, it's my dreck and I thought it up and wrote it down all by my onesies, so read and review or don't. It's all good. :)

Absolutely.

Look, I've made some great friends in fandom, and I've become more enlightened and educated on any number of real-life things as a result of it. I write for fun, not to "improve my craft" or anything like that, but I have no problem with people who use fic for different purposes.

But at the end of the day, we're writing fictional (often sexed-up) stories about someone else's fictional characters. Um, hello? It is goofy. That's what makes it so awesome. Some of us don't mind being called goofy. Hell, we even embrace it and recognize that there's much value to be had in goofy things.
