Question for those who have stories posted on AO3

(Anonymous) 2011-09-25 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
I'm curious; how is this site as far as archiving goes in terms of quality and ease of use for uploading stories and such? I've (briefly) browsed there for fic, and I've liked most of the stuff I've found posted there, but the layout has me going back and forth on whether or not I want to bother with going through the effort of looking into an invite code. I'm curious about this place because I abhor ff.net's system, and LJ's new RichText system is frustrating as hell, but I've had little information about AO3 from users.

I find it incredibly easy. I love archiving there. Uploading is pretty much "fill in the boxes", and the tagging system is really well done. It's easy to find fics, and subsequently have your fics found. On LJ, if an old fic got a review, I figured someone had recced it somewhere because no one looks at old posts, but with AO3, I figure they were just going through the tags.

Okay, thanks. :) The tagging system is what I like best about the site and honestly was one of the reasons I was interested in the site in the first place.

I upload fics the same way I post them to LJ - in fact, I moved most of my old stories by copying the same codes I used on my LJ posts. I use HTML though, not RichText. I like AO3 for that user-friendliness, pretty much anything goes and you don't have to deal with stuff like symbols and dividers not showing up like on FFN.

That said, I keep both accounts active, because AO3 readership is still pretty small and for what it's worth FFN is still the first place people go when they get into an obscure fandom (I write for these quite a bit). I think you should get an invite code, it doesn't hurt anything and you don't have to keep using it if you don't like it.

Okay, that doesn't sound too bad. I use HTML as well, but I get lost every now and again when I'm dealing with paragraph breaks, and with the new RichText thing, sometimes my HTML disappears when I upload new journal entries here, which is frustrating as all get out. And I tend to write for fairly large fandoms at the moment, so I don't think traffic issues would be too bad for me. If nothing else, I suppose it could just be another place to cross-post the stuff of mine that I actually like.

I think I'll go get myself on the waiting list. It can't hurt.

Thanks for your input. I really appreciate it. :)

One thing re: HTML from someone who deliberately writes fanfiction that abuses the fuck out of it...

AO3 can be very finicky about HTML, much like Livejournal. Be careful if you try anything crazy (mostly likely you won't, because you are a sane person who doesn't try to write House of Leaves and Homestuck crossovers)
