But I agree with you on both counts. Fanfic, like any niche hobby, is kind of goofy. Yes, I like exploring different themes and styles and whatever with my fic and it has DEFINITELY made me a better writer, no question. Goofy does not mean worthless, people. And even if the fic itself is a goofy pursuit, the community that inevitably rises from fanfic is something extremely fascinating. In fact, it is probably what helped all the people who are dealing with ~issues~ actually deal with them. Not the fic itself, though of course I can't speak for everyone.
And like others have said, I don't want it to become more than a goofy niche hobby. I don't think fanfic needs widespread mainstream awareness, because there is some SERIOUSLY freaky shit that goes on out here that we all think is perfectly normal, because... we've been here long enough. But I really don't want to know what would happen if the average, non-ficcer person (or worse, a potential employer) learned about fanfic and decided to browse the kinkmeme to see what it was all about. I had enough of a scare when I realized it was possible that my dad had discovered my boring, vanilla, PG-13-ish slash.
