I love the AO3 site too, but some of the stuff the Organization for Transformative Works gets up to is pretty... self-important. I think discussing fanfiction from a serious point of view is valid, but the idea that you can make people outside of fandom take it seriously (or defend it legally if the original creators object) just doesn't wash with me.

I don't think it's just a goofy-ass hobby but I have some sympathy for the OP of the secret.

Hold on. If the original creators object to fanfiction we are obliged to drop it like a hot potato. When did that change? Did I miss a deluge of Ann Rice novel fics?

From what I understand, the OTW believes you should not be obliged to drop it like a hot potato and supposedly they believe the issue could be fought in court and have some kind of legal defense prepared. (Not all that sure what that entails, but it's in their "What We Believe" which is linked below.)

I think it could not be fought in court (for most fanfic, anyway, some parodies have been successfully fought in court) and the idea is a waste of time. FWIW I don't think anyone is out there writing Anne Rice fic on the grounds that the OTW is going to defend it.

Wow, I'm sounding like I really have some agenda against them and I don't really. I just don't think the organization is all that great.

Ok, I love AO3's design and collection of obscure fandoms but breaking such a major fanfiction rule is horse shit.

"but the idea that you can make people outside of fandom take it seriously... just doesn't wash with me"

But part of the academic odor which some people dislike about the AO3 is connected to the fact that fandom is being taken increasingly seriously by the academy, at least.

From what I understand fandom is being taken more seriously by academics (though academics will study anything -- and I think that's a very good thing.) But I don't really think that's because of the OTW or any other organization.

I don't mind so much that the OTW wants there to be an academic approach but some of the ways they express themselves about it just irk me. Some of their statements just come off as snobbish ("We're actual professionals! Look at our credentials!), though I don't think they're snobbish people as individuals, from what I know.

But dude the whole point is that copyright is acknowledgedly arbitrary. Once liberalism gets the fuck outta Dodge fanfiction will be everywhere. And the butthurt writers who may no longer hold their fans hostage will be the norm.

Huh? Liberalism? What the hell are you smoking, and why does it make you throw in totally unrelated concepts to a discussion about whether or not writers object fanfiction for their published works?
