I think the phrase "goofy-ass" is what's everyone up in arms, but seriously, how can you guys be this defensive when the go-to defense for writing fanfic is, "Because it's fun!" And to be honest, I think fanfiction, whether it's the writing or the reading aspect, is at its funnest when it isn't taken too seriously - when there's at least some nudge nudge wink wink element to it. I mean, it's about taking crazy prompts on kink memes and supporting non-canon pairings and getting together to revel in these hijinks, not True Art.

Still, I do think there are plenty of fanfiction-related things worthy of formal academic interest, like the psychology behind it or the fandom social structure that's formed around it. But given some of the stuff that's been said about the Organization for Transformative Works, I think it's not surprising that some people are side-eying AO3. Personally, I like the latter but am a little leery of the former.
