I agree, only with the corollary that I judge you if you think The Wire is the greatest show in the history of television.

top 10, absolutely. top 5, probably. #1? eh ... maybe without that fifth season, but I still don't think it belongs there.

[identity profile] frozenish.livejournal.com 2011-09-24 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
If you can put it in the top 5, but say def not the top 1, you must have ideas about what the top 1, or at least, the other 4 or so that are better than the Wire are. List?

I'm really just curious, I don't know how on earth I would rank the best TV shows ever. But probably I would put Fawlty Towers #1. I don't know if you can compare comedies to dramas though.

Your comment has piqued my interest.

I realized right after I posted that how difficult it would be to objectively rank TV shows, lol. and you're right that comedies are even tougher to rank if they're all on the same list. I guess it's just that fans of The Wire tend to automatically place it on that pedestal, which is totally understandable because it's a fantastic show, but it did have its weaknesses, you know?

taking into account the writing, acting, direction, pacing and character development over seasons, Breaking Bad would be my choice for #1. the episodes are almost consistently perfect, like little self-contained parables. (god that sounds pretentious) I don't even know how they do it.

but now that I'm thinking about this, The Wire is probably #2 anyway. what is it about these two shows that puts them in the same category so often? there are like three other people in this thread mentioning BB, as if they're just like synonymous with each other. it's weird.

as for the rest of the top 5, it just really comes down to personal preference. if you count miniseries, I'd say The Pacific and Roots, but that's just me.

Fawlty Towers is the best thing John Cleese ever did tbqh.

[identity profile] frozenish.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a big fan of the Wire, but also have to admit that I've only seen seasons 1, 4, and 5 (I watched it with my bf and he managed to watch 2 and 3 without me; I was too lazy to catch up on them before going to 4 and 5). So, I don't put it on any kind of pedestal, not even having seen all of it. Season 4 is still probably the best season of television I can remember having watched, though.

And yes, I know what you mean about weaknesses: there were certain characters/storylines I found untenably boring, they just happened to be overpowered by the characters/storylines I couldn't get enough of. I was more about the people on the actual streets than the political side, tbh, though I know they go hand-in-hand.

Breaking Bad has been recced to me so many times, and I guess I really just ought to get to watching it. I've only seen one episode so far (the first of season 3), but it did look interesting. That one's at the top of my list.

Roots and the Pacific, I've never seen at all. Roots has been on my list for years but man does it seem like a commitment and I am so lazy. The Pacific honestly I've never even heard much about; I should probably look into it.

And I for sure agree about Fawlty Towers being the best thing John Cleese ever did. Leagues better than anything Monty Python, tbh (for me, A Fish Called Wanda is even better than Monty Python). I've watched every episode at least 10 times, and I could keep doing it, too.

ANYWAY, thank you for the v thoughtful reply, and for the recs!

Just curious, but what would be your no. 1? Not attacking you, just interested in any show that's equal/better to The Wire.

like I said in the (unnecessarily long) comment up there, it's really hard to be objective when comparing TV shows, but Breaking Bad is the only thing I've seen that might be superior to The Wire. Roots and The Pacific are also very close.

I'm no arbiter of TV quality or anything, just kind of skeptical when people automatically say The Wire is better than any other show hands down, no competition (not that you were saying that, but it's a really common opinion).

Every show you've listed is amazing, though I tend to avoid putting mini-series and series in the same category. I think if Breaking Bad ends strong (stronger than season 5 of The Wire, anyway), I'll be ranking it at #1. God, I love that show.

Just popping in to say: omg icon love. Bodie was so my fave in the Wire. You don't know the tears I cried.

I'd probably call The Wire my number one, but the ones I think come close are:

Six Feet Under (this comes the closest. They are so different it's kind of hard to say which is "better")
Mad Men (I'd say The Wire at its best -- Seasons 3 and 4 -- is better than Mad Men at its best so far, but The Wire at its worst is worse than Mad Men at its worst).
Battlestar Galactica comes close (but I also like the forth season WAY more than most people).
Game of Thrones has potential to be up there, based on how great the books are, if it continues to be as good as it was during Season 1.

And of course, that's just dramas -- comedies are too hard to compare.

IA for sure about Game of Thrones. (Except about the books, I was frustrated to no end by them.) But if things keep going like the first season... I don't know, girl. It's just so intense, in the best way possible.

Also, re: your comment downthread which I am too lazy to respond to separately, but I def understand what your friend is talking about with the "continuity porn" (which is a great way to phrase it, tbh). I ended up liking it partly despite, partly because of the really relentless insistence on imitating life's general lack of climactic events, but I did sometimes wish they would just give me some closure on one story or another. I could never decide whether I liked it because it was trying so hard to imitate real life situations, or whether I thought it wasn't doing enough to be an actual fictional story arc. In the end, I decided on the former.

Btw, great icon.
