I do a little too, but that first season is really hard to get into. I almost gave up on it several times.

That said, anyone who watches the second season and still hates it has no taste.

I've never watched it, and have no intentions of ever watching it. I'm sure it's fantastic television. I get recced it all the time. But everything I've heard about it tells me it's one of those gritty, realistic, massively depressing tv shows, and I have never met a single one of those I actually liked.

this. while I adore Oz and consider it one of the best TV shows ever made, I can't really say I enjoyed watching it, mostly because it was such a cruel and depressing show. from what I've heard, The Wire and Breaking Bad are the same.

I actually thought the same thing and was initially like "I don't really want to depress myself just because it's good television," but it's not as gritty/horrific as other shows. It's definitely not on the level of Breaking Bad or Sopranos. It's much more into the banality/bureaucracy of evil, so to speak. Which still may not be your thing, but since I had similar reservations, I thought it wouldn't hurt to share.

I agree, only with the corollary that I judge you if you think The Wire is the greatest show in the history of television.

top 10, absolutely. top 5, probably. #1? eh ... maybe without that fifth season, but I still don't think it belongs there.

Eh. I am a huge fan of this show (it's probably my personal favorite of all time), but I think it really depends on WHY people say they don't like it.

After all, gritty realism with a lot of death is not everyone's thing. And I have a friend who doesn't like it who explains why as saying "it's continuity porn." Which is true. And that's part of why I love it -- I love that it's one, long, complicated story that you have to pay close attention to to fully understand. But my friend likes TV that is wacky/thinky/funny/odd and can be consumed on an episode by episode basis at random times, and so The Wire just isn't what he's looking for AT ALL. And, well, that's legit.

I don't like it because I dated a coke dealer and a crack addict. Both guys had legal troubles and health troubles, and I stuck by them through all of it. I watched them track down people who owed them and get tracked down by people they owed. That world of pagers and pay phones and sketchy pads? Was my life for quite a few years.

The Wire completely portrays it realistically. Good for them. Lucky for anyone who can find it entertaining. I don't judge you if you do, but it hits too close to home for me.

I love The Wire but don't be unreasonable. As a fan you should know better than anyone that it isn't for everyone, and that has nothing to do with flaws either.

It sounds like another cop drama show and I don't particularly like those. Sorry. I'll probably never go out of my way to watch this show. I might if it happened to be on tv and there was nothing else on or someone else was watching it on the tv. I don't care if critics say it's the best tv show ever made. It wouldn't be the first time I disagreed with them. I thought The Pacific was crap. But hey, you have your opinions and I have mine. Whatevs.

I haven't seen it, but I'm kind of turned off by how often I hear it praised, just because of the attitude of a lot of fans. I don't like saying "pretentious" because I have been called that before, but a lot of people who like the show tend to act like they're part of some secret club of elite for liking it, as if the whole world isn't unanimously in agreement that it's the best show ever. It seems you can't have a discussion about television these days without someone going "well, I didn't like x, but I guess I'm spoiled because of the Wire...unlike all you other lay people." I know the show didn't get recognition when it was on TV but nowadays it's pretty popular, so people acting like they're special for liking it rubs me the wrong way.

That said, it may very well be the best show ever, I don't know so I will reserve judgement. I guess I'm just suspicious when so many people give it such high praise. Can any show really be THAT good? The other thing that bothers me is that the primary person who keeps telling me how awesome it is also keeps telling me that of course I won't like it, which is both illogical and insulting to me, but has nothing to do with the show itself.
