What makes it unresolved for me is that Cas never actually confessed to the boys that he did it. It's part of an unfortunate pattern of behavior with him that I think contributed directly to the Season 6 train wreck: anything he's not proud of, he avoids admitting to until his friends find out much later, and once they do, it makes him look duplicitous even if his initial intentions were good or he was acting under duress.

Opening the panic room, turning Anna in, bringing Sam back soulless, working with Crowley...some of the disastrous consequences of those actions could have been averted or ameliorated if he had just been honest about them.

I suspect that keeping such secrets may also have made it easier for him to begin lying outright. I hate to use the term 'slippery slope,' but I think here maybe it does apply.

But they clearly showed how he contemplated telling Dean. At that point he had the experience level of a toddler when it came to free will and choice and he (wronly) chose to leave him to his white Picket fence life. It was a matter of lack of experience not duplicity.

Clarification: it makes him look duplicitous from the point of view of his friends, who lack the viewer's fourth-wall perspective. Of course we know the whole story, but they can't.

I can't help but wonder if Castiel would be more open with his feelings/actions if the Winchesters didn't berate hi for so many of them. He reminds me of a child who has done something bad, knows its bad (but doesn't quite understand why), then hides the evidence and only tells an adult when directly asked about it. Which I suppose is an apt comparison. He is like a child when it comes to understanding things on earth. He doesn't fully understand free will and has spent 99% of his god-knows-how-long lifetime following orders. When he finally does make decisions on his own, they usually end badly and the WInchesters usually berate him for it.

That's a good point...Dean especially can be pretty critical, and Cas really seems to crave his approval and affection (not necessarily speaking in a shippy way, though it can be interpreted that way if you prefer.)

I think Dean's like his father in that he's not good at communicating that he still cares about people even when he's angry with them (he may not even feel sometimes as if he does, though we all know it.) And Cas, of course--like a little kid, as you say and as Dean keeps saying, ironically--can't really tell. It doesn't help that Dean has a very bad habit of blatantly holding their friendship over Castiel's head to secure his cooperation.
