I don't see what's wrong with assuming someone with short hair is a lesbian. I have longer hair, and people assume I'm straight all the time. But I guess I know what you mean. It's very frustrating not being able to meet women and getting hit on by men just because I have longer hair.

THIS. As a practical matter, there are valid reasons for not wanting to be assumed as having the opposite preference that you do, by certain people or in certain situations. If you're out at a bar or a social mixer type of thing and you want to meet men, you want them to understand it might be OK to approach you. If you're at work or just out with friends or something, on the other hand, it shouldn't matter.

I've been assumed a lesbian more than a few times in 40 years; I'm single and never been married, which is a BIG thing with some people. Hell, it started when I was a teenager, with my dad asking me it all the time. The only time it has ever bothered me is if it was in front of a guy I wanted to date. And as for actual lesbians misconstruing and thinking I might be interested as a result of someone's misunderstanding? The only time I'd say anything is if one actually tried to hit on me ... same as saying "not interested" if a guy I don't want tries it.
