Same. I mean, I get enough about that already (you have short hair, that's stereotypically butch, are you...?) when it's no one's business. I jsut like short hair. :/

But these ladies are lovely~ <3

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2011-09-24 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
People assume women are lesbians if they have short hair? Seriously? I mean, I see women with short hair all over the place and I doubt that they're all lesbians. (It would be pretty cool if they were, and this is Los Angeles, but... still, no.)

(ETA: I'm not saying it doesn't happen. I just honestly didn't know that.)

I've felt your pain, OP. I rocked a pixie cut for a couple of years, and got hit on by women all the time. It would have been nice if I was interested, but no. Eventually, I grew my hair out. Well, not only for that reason -- I was ready for a change, but still.

Yeah, it sucks that society thinks short hair = butch lesbian, but it is what it is. If I thought my facial structure could handle it anymore, I'd go back to a short cut. It was sooooo nice and cute and easy to take care of.

In addition to the lesbian thing, I've had a couple of people think I'm a man when I've had short hair before (not even pixie cut short!) because I'm flat-chested and completely uncurvy. Fun.

I've also felt your pain. I had a short pixie cut for two years and ohhhhhh the amount of "are you lesbian?" comments I got. :/ I'm straight. I have long hair now but I really want to go back to a pixie cut again.

[identity profile] sweetgreens.livejournal.com 2011-09-24 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel the same way, OP. I prefer short hair because I have awesome cheekbones that deserve to be showed off, but people assume a lot of things about me. They think I'm a tomboy and are shocked to discover that I like girly things like baking and doll-collecting.

You may or may not have seen these other pixie-cut characters, but I recommend checking out:
Meryl from Trigun
Makie from Blade of the Immortal
Deneve from Claymore
Sakura from Kare Kano
Maria (Risa too in the flashbacks) from Fullmetal Alchemist
Harumi from MARS

I know what you mean OP, I grew my hair long when I was about 18 because I had this idea that I wasn't feminine enough with short hair, even though I dress in a pretty 'girly' style. I'm now 25 and have recently had my hair cut short again and I love it! My hair is in much better condition and I realise now that it doesn't make me any less feminine or more butch having short hair, that's a section of society's opinion and it shouldn't affect me so much. :)

[identity profile] yami-chan.livejournal.com 2011-09-24 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I know exactly what you're talking about OP. I'm not even all that straight/feminine, but it still bugs me that people think that it's because of my short hair. I think short hair is elegant as all get out (which Ms. Kyle proves all the damn time too), which is one of the reasons I keep it short. So it aggravates me when people always say to me that it's not pretty or feminine.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-24 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
FUCK YEAH, BRIAR ROSE! All statements about ladies with short hair being unfeminine are now invalid.

This one also sucks in reverse - I'm bi/pan, but apparently if you have hair past your shoulders it's absolutely impossible for you to be interested in chicks. :-/ And my face looks even fatter when my hair is short, so I haven't cut it in over a decade.

As someone who had one of her own male coworkers look at her and ask, "What happened to you?" after I got my hair cut short, I feel you. I've had a few people (including my own mother, natch) feel the need to tell me that I don't look feminine enough anymore with my short hair. I don't let it bother me. I love it short. It's fun and easy, and bonus, looks good with my features. I've had more men compliment me over my short hair than I ever did when it was long.

ITA totally anon.

My hair is fine and growing it passed my chin means not great hair looks horrific. Couple this with broad shoulders and assumptions are most definitely made. Sometimes rudely to my face.

[identity profile] satji.livejournal.com 2011-09-24 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. I've lived a great part of my life with short hair (long hair are so goddamn irritating omg how do you live with iiiiiiit) and no one ever asked me if I was a lesbian because of it O.o I didn't even know it was a stereotype!

It's always so weird and stupid to assume one's sexuality by their hair. Dude, it's hair.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-24 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I think about cutting my hair because I'm sick of being mistaken for straight and to save on shampoo/time. But then I realized you have to keep cutting it and spend money on scissors or clippers or saloons or whatever short haired people have to spend money on.

And here I thought I was the only one that prefers short over long hair on women. I remember how much everyone else whined and complained when Emma Watson cut her hair.

[identity profile] citrinesunset.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
I think making assumptions about a person's sexuality is pretty annoying, especially based on something like a hairstyle, and it's not something I'd defend. But I'll be honest: part of me can't help but be annoyed that this assumption that short hair = queer never seems to be applied to me. I mean, I'm trying to look butch, but always seem to be read as straight.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-25 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
It seems that you've had the misfortune of encountering stupid people, op.

Length of hair =/= sexuality.

Some people are just stupid about sexuality and gender identity. I remember when during a short conversation with my Biology teacher (a very educated lady) she told me that the creator of Ranma 1/2 had to be gay because the main character switched gender when he was splashed with water. Yes.

/cool story bro

(Anonymous) 2011-09-25 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
I feel you OP. As a child I was constantly told that I was a lesbian/dyke because I had a pixie cut. I was six. I refused to have short hair for years. Recently I cut it short again and was congratulated by a family member for "being that comfortable with yourself"

The fuck? I am bi, but the family member doesn't know this and that wasn't the reason I cut my hair (I'd caught lice babysitting but hells if I was letting that slip).

(the lice are gone now and my hair is beautiful and long again)

(Anonymous) 2011-09-25 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
I don't see what's wrong with assuming someone with short hair is a lesbian. I have longer hair, and people assume I'm straight all the time. But I guess I know what you mean. It's very frustrating not being able to meet women and getting hit on by men just because I have longer hair.

[identity profile] eastcoastfilly.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
I started keeping my hair short sometime in high school, after having really long hair for years. Long story short, long hair is a big pain in the ass to take care of and I wanted a new look anyway.

Almost every time, if someone sees me with the short hair for the first time, their reaction sounds something like this: "Oh my God, you chopped off all your hair!! O_O....It still looks okay, though. ^^;;;" From the first day I walked into my high school with the hair, to just a few months ago when I ran into a cousin I haven't seen in years.

Plus, even though nobody's told me this, I've read plenty of "but men like women with loooong hair!" First of all, I really couldn't care less. Second, if these boys really love long hair so much, they can grow it out themselves and see how fun it is. Or, if a guy really wanted me to grow it out for them, I'd ask them to compensate me accordingly. They want it, after all.
