I think I get where you're coming from OP, I tend to enjoy things more when its just myself and everyone around me isn't talking about it. For example I love Portal 2, but everyone talking about it and quoting it and making references to it is starting to get on my nerves no matter how much I love the game. Or if there's a particular song I like, I really enjoy it when I can listen to it in moderation and it doesn't come on the radio every five minutes.

I get what you're saying. Portal is EVERYWHERE lately, and you can't really control the radio, so all this is forced on you and you can't do much about that.
With OP, they're talking as if they absolutely have to participate in a huge part of fandom.
