I've never understood this. I love it when things I like get more attention. It means I have more people to share my enjoyment with, more fanfiction, more art, more fantheories, (I'm not much of a shipper but one could say more people to share your ship with). It makes whatever it is last longer, grow larger, and even if it ends canonically, the experience doesn't. Also, if it's not something that's ended already, the attention (and possibly money) will be likely to make the creator keep on creating and giving, so you as an individual will receive more of what you love. (unless the quality goes down as demands are higher or passion gives out, which sucks when it happens.)

If you're not that way, though, just ignore the fandom and enjoy it by yourself, I suppose :)

I'm afraid this is a classic symptom of being a hipster.

[identity profile] hallo-katzchen.livejournal.com 2011-09-24 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Gotta love that hipster mentality :\

hipster spotted

[identity profile] ditdatdo.livejournal.com 2011-09-24 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I have Hipster Syndrome too. I once said years ago that I liked the Beatles to my dad, and he was like "Really? But they're so... popular. I thought you wouldn't. You wouldn't have liked them back in the sixties." And he was right. I either wouldn't have liked them, or kept my like of them secret. That's when I first realised what a dirty, dirty hipster I am. It doesn't happen with everything, but I am naturally predisposed to hate things that everyone loves.

Oh well.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-09-24 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Part of growing up is learning that the special experiences in your life are very, very common and that you aren't actually that special. Many people still struggle with this.
Falling in love? Getting married? Having kids? All ridiculously common, but typically incredibly meaningful to the individual having the experience. They honestly think that somehow, somehow this has to be special and different from all the other people who get married and have kids because it's so intensely emotional and meaningful. Thing is, it's not less emotional or meaningful just because it's common.
You just have to ask yourself if you want to be the kind of person who thinks that experiences are somehow devalued by being typical. You seem to already know it's stupid and selfish so I have hope that you're not just a run-of-the-mill stupid hipster.

Prayer of the Selfish Child

[identity profile] mskye.livejournal.com 2011-09-24 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray thee Lord my soul to keep
And if I day before I wake
I pray thee Lord my toys to break
So none of the other kids can use 'em!

Amen

Man whenever I see that volume cover of TWD, I'm always slightly disappointed that the interior art after issue #1 is so drastically different. Tony Mooooooore. ;__;

lol hipster

What I do when a fandom I'm in becomes popular, or I join a large fandom, is I find a small community. That way I get the camaraderie I love while not getting overwhelmed with the size.

[identity profile] lipstickcrisis.livejournal.com 2011-09-24 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not just a hipster thing so much as it's a childish wish to be unique--and not knowing any other way to do so but through the media you enjoy. Honestly I think everyone goes through that. You'll grow out of it.

[identity profile] nomorenoodles.livejournal.com 2011-09-24 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of get what you mean. I mean, I like it when something I like is popular, because then it has a higher chance of continuing (TV shows for example: higher ratings, the show will last longer). But I don't really like fandom so I stay out of it, and that way the thing I love can remain popular but still hold a very special meaning to me that I don't have to share with anyone.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-24 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Two of the things you like have sub-par art and rely way too heavily on references. One of them introduced new ways of shipping, and as a result it's the only thing 80% of the fanbase cares about. Both are vapid. Does that make you feel better?

(Anonymous) 2011-09-24 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Now me, I hate when things become popular because it's a sign that they're slowly degrading and beginning to cater to a lowest common denominator, but that's just me.

I-indie Rock Pete?

(Anonymous) 2011-09-24 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously, this is like the angry version of Indie Rock Pete's sole moment of self-awareness in Diesel Sweeties. From "Indie Rock Pete Hits Indie Rock-Bottom":

http://www.dieselsweeties.com/irp/strips/p22f.gif

...So, maybe it's a similar feeling of relative over-saturation?

[identity profile] ensuing.livejournal.com 2011-09-24 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I sort of hate when some things get popular too, but for a different reason.

I often get into fandoms fairly early and have a great time discussing plot/characters sharing art/fic whatnot with a small group of people and all of a sudden the show will get popular and fans will flood the community on LJ and instead of (mostly) interesting posts, a great number of the posts will be something like, "I saw a license plate with a 6 and 9 in it and took a picture LOL IT'S MY PAIRING!" "This store is called ARMSTRONG OMG I BET ARMSTRONG WORKS THERE!!" You know, things that might be sort of chuckle-worthy if they weren't being posted ALL THE TIME. It gets tiring after a while and eventually I'll just stop watching the community, but by that time I'm often so annoyed by it all that I associate the series itself with the annoying people who flood the community with those sorts of things and just can't enjoy it like I used to.

I am also friends with a few people like that in real life and after long evenings of "OMG OMG OMG that building is blue like ____'s eyes", "I'm the biggest fan of __(whatever is super popular)__ because __(strange claim)___ and ensuing you're not a real fan because you don't know the names of __(something random like all the pairing names in Pokémon)___," etc, etc it makes me wish the fandoms I joined stayed small/I didn't introduce some friends to them.

I know it's really an asshole thing of me to say, and it IS my fault for getting upset over these sorts of things. It's not like this happens all the time or anything, but it happens enough to make me selfishly wish things would stay small. Sorry for the rambling.
