Yeah, I know that feeling (I suspect I'm in exactly the same boat as you, and it's shabby and sad little boat to be in). But for anyone, regardless of situation, life and love is never as easy as fiction. Then again, it's also rarely as difficult, in some respects; you're not likely to, say, have to ever rescue the person you care about from Nazi dinosaurs from space. That's not much of a bright side, but there you go.

is true but i think slash fans coined the term when they started the kirk/spock way back when. it applies to straight characters but they're mostly called het, and lesbian pairings are femslash or just slash

Yeah I know the feeling OP. Even in fiction when I see a positive portrayal of gay couples I can't help but look around me and see all the crazy gay christians. When you deal with that sort of stuff you can get pretty fucked up so I try not to hold it against them though. I'm sute they want their life to get better but are scared just as you are.

I know the feeling OP. I'll read a piece of good slash (yep, it exists) and all the little romantic pieces of awesome can depress me like crazy. Granted, I can't relate 100 percent. My problem isn't closeted old guys, it just that well... it seems as though, when one is a gay guy with a physical disability, we don't exist. Greta, now I've just depressed myself.

I can't totally relate, but I feel the same way sometimes. I feel like being queer, I can never just meet someone at school or work or whatever the same way I might be able to if I were straight. I mean, yeah, theoretically I could. It just doesn't happen. But in fics, it's never the case that one of them is gay and pursues the other, only to learn that they're straight, or anything like that.
