No such thing as doin' it wrong! At least, not so long as you're having fun (and not going out of your way to make anyone feel bad, which you sound far too nice to do.) Have fun in fandom, keep it as your form of expression, and don't let anyone tell you what you should want out of life.

No such thing. Original fiction isn't something so superior that fanfic is only worthwhile for practice. A good story is a good story, and fanfic has its own unique worth.

Definitely not doing it wrong.

I personally do want to publish something original, but I probably never will. But if you don't want to, that's great too. Just enjoy fanfic.

If wanting to write fanfiction and not get into writing/publishing original fiction is wrong, I don't want to be right!

You're not doing it wrong. For some people fanfic is mostly practice for original fiction, but that's not the only way to think about it.

Are you me, anon?

You're not doing it wrong! If you're enjoying yourself and your writing, then you're good to go!

I love writing fanfic, and eventually I want to finish writing write original fic. BUT I don't want to be published ~*~professionally~*~ Just, idk, have a separate LJ and post it there.

I don't think you're doing anything wrong OP!

Fanfic is about exploring established characters or established worlds. Original fic is about creating new characters and/or worlds. They use two different skill sets. Now, writing a sequel to your original work uses the fanfic skill set in addition to the one for original fic, so in that sense fanfic can be useful practice, but really, they're two different types of writing. Do what you enjoy.

Nah, you're not doing it wrong, OP. Some of us just want to play in fandom sandboxes =) Nothing shameful in that!

[identity profile] dragonimp.livejournal.com 2011-09-26 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
The point is to enjoy what you're doing. If you enjoy fanfic and have no interest in writing original fics, then you're not doing it wrong.

You can be incredibly talented and work very hard at it and still never manage to get original stuff published, while with fanfiction there is no pressure for that kind of accomplishment for it all to be worthwhile, which is kind of bullshit for there to be with any kind of writing anyway. If you're happy enough just posting stories online, that's a blessing that you can have that state of mind, honestly.
