...how can you hate it so much without even watching it?

[identity profile] captain-loki.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
maybe they're a hipster and hate it cos its popular?

I don't understand hating something without ever having watched it before. I can see irrationally not liking something if you have a friend that goes on and on and on about it to the point that it turns you off of ever wanting to experience it yourself...but the few times that have happened to me I've decided to give whatever it was a chance and have realized I was missing something amazing...

yeah, it reminds me of all those people who rant about how awful Twilight is without even trying to read it first, so they just parrot whatever everyone else is saying. For me, I read/watch the source material before I hate on it. It's more satisfying to rage when I actually know what I'm talking about

[identity profile] captain-loki.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't read twilight for the longest time because everyone I knew kept telling me how much I'd like it and I was afraid they were right.

It took about three paragraphs into chapter one for me to go 'hahaha thanks guys...no'

It's true, I'd like to be able to make an informed decision about something, instead of just nodding along with everyone else

Same here. I read it after the first movie came out because my best friend, who'd read it and loved it, was all "you'll like it; it's got vampires in it" so I read it because she was my friend and wanted me too, and then I was all "WTF, best friend, these are not vampires!" but I was glad that I read them because it meant when I ranted about them, I knew what I was talking about. I turned her off them too, so some good came from it. Got her to watch Buffy instead.

I had never even heard of Twilight at all until the movie was about to come out and all my friends were like 'you'll love it! you like harry potter and stuff!'

[identity profile] tw-31988.livejournal.com 2011-09-26 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
ia. i've never read Twilight, but i've seen the movies and i usually bitch about those.

[identity profile] greenhoodloxley.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
This. Sometimes people talk about things so much you get sick of the very name. But eventually you just have to try things for yourself.

[identity profile] captain-loki.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
It was like that for me with Stargate, I'd always walk past my Dad when he was watching it and it looked stupid, so I refused and then eventually I watched and it was the best idea ever...particularly since he then started watching Supernatural when he would tease me for watching that.

[identity profile] greenhoodloxley.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I refused to see Pirates of the Caribbean for the longest time because I loathed Orlando Bloom. My sister had to convince me. It was worth it.
Similar thing with Phantom of the Opera. All my friends were RAVING about it. When I did finally give in and go see it with two co-workers instead, I suddenly understood why.

It's kind nice in a weird way, to realize you were wrong, and suddenly you have something awesome to enjoy.

It's a humbling experience, for sure. I was uninterested in playing RTS video games for the longest time and even vocally said they were stupid. My boyfriend really wanted to play it with me, so I gave in and now I can't stop playing and researching strategies.

Not OP

(Anonymous) 2011-09-26 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Well, personally I hate it because I've had so many people try to shove it down my throat telling me how much I 'need to watch it!' 'OMG, have you lived under a rock' ect. and the annoyance from having that constantly just built up into hate.

Re: Not OP

[identity profile] captain-loki.livejournal.com 2011-09-26 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
etc.*

(Anonymous) 2011-09-25 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Giving OP the benefit of the doubt, they may just not be a fan of sci-fi shows and assumed they would not like DW and TW based on that. Hate is a strong word and the OP shouldn't have been so vocal about it, but I can understand someone who doesn't have an interest in something because they didn't like the genre in the past. It's impossible to give every single thing a try and resort to passing judgement based on what they know.

Well, the first time I saw part of a new Doctor Who episode, I thought it seemed rather lame. And the old school effects and creature costumes made me wince. Now, several years later, I have just gotten into the show, I understand the appeal and why the old school look of the show works. But I can understand disliking it, especially if you caught a glimpse of an episode from the middle without understanding the context.

A friend of mine casually looked as I was watching NuWho 3x01 with headphones... so she got aliens - in a hospital - on the Moon... with no audio. She's still under the impression that the show makes no sense at all XD
