And, sadly, it is more likely than Kotetsu/Barnaby becoming canon.

> Gay main couple in mainstream anime targeted towards men in their thirties.

Yeah, no.

sa: damn, I read "than" as "that"

Haha, nope, I'm not one of those.

targeted towards men in their thirties

Yeah, targeted is the key word there. The actual fanbase is mostly female though and Sunrise knows that.

I'm not sure I agree with T&B being targeted towards that particular group -- but, even if it was, a gay relationship actually wouldn't have been as unthinkable as you say. I almost feel like you get that sorta thing in seinen manga more often than not, and I can think of quite a few instances in anime as well.

I remember reading something where someone on the staff said that they wanted to make a show that all kinds of people could enjoy, including women and older men. I don't think the series will ever explicitly make Kotetsu and Barnaby romantically involved, but doing that isn't really incompatible with having the show appeal to men in their thirties anyway, I don't think. The huge numbers of "I don't care if they're gay or not any more, I just want them to be happy together" comments prior to the finale were pretty heartwarming.

*nod nod*

I've been in a lot of fandoms, but I really think the T&B fans are some of the best people ever. All the worry for the finale -- with comments like the above -- was just too sweet for words.

I don't know about "more often than not" - I don't think I've ever seen an actual gay relationship between main (read: important) characters in anything seinen, unless it was for comic relief. But variations on Passionate Male Friendship/Rivalry/etc. that doesn't develop into a romantic relationship? Sure.

(Case in point: Shigurui. Granted, I only read the last volume and I'm still hesitating on reading the rest, but I swear it was one of the gayest manga I've ever seen, as in, blatantly homoerotic-and-not-BL with UST that you can cut with a knife. But no actual gay relationship as far as I'm aware. Just Manly Passion.)

Only one I can think of is D-ASH by Kitazawa Miya. There's a character named Miki who's probably the most important rival of the main character and is also in love with him. He is also shown either pre- or post-sex with his male trainer multiple times (I don't think he was ever shown going at it but it has been a while since I last read the manga).

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2011-09-25 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that "more often than not" was an obvious exaggeration. But I did mean actual gay relationships; not just comic relief or passionate friendships/rivalries. There's quite a lot to be found -- I've been meaning to write up a rec list for ages, gah.

Oh man, you should read the rest of Shigurui! While this particular case is something that could be debated as opposed to being undeniably canon, I personally think that Irako was in love with Fujiki. Unrequited, and utterly twisted thanks to the latter's action (don't want to be too specific as to not spoil you more than you've already been) -- but still very much in love.

I would be very interested in such a rec list...

As for Shigurui, thanks for the suggestion, I think I'll read it when I have some time! I think the problem is that it was recced to me as "brutal, realistic action manga with weird artwork" and I was like "dude, I just finished Sengoku Basara, do you think I'd be able to take something like this seriously?" And well, I couldn't. :D;;; (The ridiculously homoerotic content didn't help.) But it does seem interesting and knowing that there may have been actually more between the two, other than the usual Manly Rivalry, just moved it further up on my list of reading priorities. :D *is shallow*

targeted towards men in their thirties.

That may be how it started back in the planning stages, but the actual anime? Ahahaha, no. 8D

(Not that men in their thirties are not among the final target groups, but seriously, come on.)
