I don't see why it has to be one or the other. Can't they just let the player pick a male or female version, like with Shepard, the P3 hero, etc.?

IDK about you, but I'd hate the option to choose. If Ninty make a Zelda game starring either Link or Zelda, I'd want the story to be relevant to either character. Not just randomly interchangeable.


And I agree with the OP that Link is a character, not an avatar. So I like the idea of each game being Link's adventure, and not just "the male avatar's" adventure.

I don't think that would make the the story interchangeable. I mean, it's not like him being male was ever a major plot point. They made him a guy just because they originally assumed all the players were going to be guys and he was, at the time, meant to be just an avatar (even if he's kinda grown into more than that).

At most, they might have to tone down the way some of the girls flirt with him (Ruto...), but that doesn't seem like a big deal?
