i don't have an issue with pointing out something that is legitimately good. my problem was in response to the wording "praise steps in the right direction," which i took to mean any step, no matter how minuscule or basic. perhaps that's not quite what you meant, but that's how i read it. this may be because i'm used to (and tired of) seeing women enthusiastically praise men or media for not being complete sexist douchebags.

i mean, yes, positive reinforcement can help, but i think it'd be equally ridiculous to expect a boss to look at a horrible employee and go "well, you lost us a million dollars, you managed to break every piece of equipment in this office, and when you tripped me earlier i broke my foot... but you tried! and you came into the office on time today!" in the same way i don't think people should be obligated to praise any bare-minimum not-awful (as opposed to genuinely great) thing.
