The thing I love about Stannis is how he's pretty much had a life where everything that could go wrong DID go wrong, and he still tries to do what he believes is the "right" thing. I get the feeling he doesn't even LIKE half the things he's doing, but he does them because in his mind, there's no other choice. The quote (lovingly taken from TV tropes) "God knows, it's easy to be kind; the hard thing is to be just", pretty much completely sums him up.

I also am fascinated by his relationships with his brothers, Davos, Melisandre, Selyse and Shireen (Jon too, but he''s more recent). The sad thing is that out of all of them, only Davos (maybe Shireen, but their relationship is really ambiguous) would stick with him as a FRIEND, rather than due to blood relations or crazy prophecies.

Yes, it's one of the many things about Stannis. His life made him bitter and resentful, but it didn't make him cruel. He'd rather keep making himself miserable than fail his duties. That quote is very fitting, yes. I love how absolutely unselfish Stannis is in his actions.

Stannis' relationship with his brothers is one of the most interesting things in the books. And I agree with you, only Davos really cares about him. I think Stannis and Jon also have lots of potential to be allies and maybe even something like friends, so I hope they'll meet again. I love them together.
