I have only just started ACOK, so maybe he gets better, but already in the prologue I hated his guts for how mean he was to that old Maester. But maybe that just is his lobster personality shining through, I dunno.

The prologue of ACOK is Stannis' most dickish chapter, and looking back it's almost OOC for him. Stannis is later on rude and tactless, but he's never, ever cruel, and his behaviour in that prologue is just ... weird. I think GRRM just -wanted- to make Stannis look like the big bad guy in his first scene, to make sure the readers will be surprised when he turns out to be a good guy later on.
