I've started to read Homestuck a few times before and these types of secrets always just make me wonder if all these characters are really as deep and "complex" as everyone likes to portray them, or if this is just another case of people taking shit too seriously.

Hahah nope. Basically, Troll society is culturally bisexual. This is covered very briefly in comic.

As with many things, the fandom went batshit crazy over the implications, on pretty much all sides.

We do know for a fact the troll OP mentioned has only sought out ladies for redrom romance, and Andrew says that while troll culture doesn't have a word for it, Human's would recognize Kanaya as a lesbian.

This of course led to several factions arguing over technical definitions. Admittedly, looking above, I'm one of them. What I'm not is taking this half as seriously as far too many people are doing, since it's ultimately as relevant to the storyline as John liking ghostbusters.
