She's my favourite character in the show, but I don't know what any stereotypes of Canadians are, so I wouldn't notice them. Except the ones about hockey.

Not OP

(Anonymous) 2011-10-13 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I know which ones.

The accents, the fears, the suggestion that Ontario is sparsely populated. The hockey jokes, the jokes about the monarchy in Britain, even the joke about Harvey's. It's stupid.

lol Robin's Canadian-stereotype moments usually read to me like they've been written by someone who knows nothing about Canada at all. I'm never sure if that's the point or not. If she was solely a Canadian pastiche she probably wouldn't be so fond of handguns, though.

[identity profile] yukinoomoni.livejournal.com 2011-10-13 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Shows what you know about Canadians. Lots of them are for legalisation of guns, and many enjoy shooting ranges and hunting. My sister and her partner come to mind.

The one that really jumped out there was the one where she burned the turkey because "I thought the oven was in Celcius!". I was so distracted by the fact that most Canadians don't set their ovens in Celcius that I didn't catch that the turkey would be undercooked. :p

[identity profile] danneeness.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
I think they're hilarious partly because they're so inaccurate and partly because they're so exaggerated. I can't imagine being offended by the inaccuracy, though. It's not like we're (Canadians) (on the whole) an oppressed group.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-13 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
The show is full of stupid stereotypes. "Friends" reloaded.

[identity profile] yukinoomoni.livejournal.com 2011-10-13 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I'm actually one to semi-agree. For the most part, she is written normally. It's only when her Canadian background is mentioned that it turns into a Royal Canadian Air Farce. like someone said above, almost like some idiot stole the script to write idiot jokes about Canadians.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-17 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
HDU take Air Farce's name in vain!

/nonny still misses the Chicken Cannon

[identity profile] myrasis.livejournal.com 2011-10-13 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I thought the Canadian jokes were kind of funny at first and then at some point it just got to be too much for me to stomach. It's one of the things I don't like about the show anymore.

[identity profile] helenadax.livejournal.com 2011-10-13 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know anything about Canadian cliches, but I don't like what they've done to Robin anyway. She was an interesting character and now it's painful to see her.

[identity profile] jedi-pineapple.livejournal.com 2011-10-13 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Robin used to be my second favourite character, but lately I don't like her much. Partly because the writers constantly shove the Canadian stereotypes down our throat, and partly because I hated her romance with Barney and how her character has kinda gone downhill since. But I will admit, I do like her with her new boyfriend. I think they're cute together.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-13 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I've never even heard a Canadian stereotype.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-13 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
This secret is a Canadian stereotype. Nicely done.

I love kinda love the Canadian stereotypes, and only partially because it lets me roll my eyes and grumble "Stupid Americans, eh." I really miss Canada, so having Tim Hortons or the sparseness of Ontario mentioned on American television makes me giggle with glee =D

i find it pretty amusing tbh

and this is coming from a canadian expat

[identity profile] gertie-flirty.livejournal.com 2011-10-13 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Is it a stereotype that Canadians are afraid of the dark, though?

Also, the show is heavy on all sorts of stereotypes--Marshall's from Minnesota, so his family plays in the worst weather and eats terribly. Blondes are dumb. Architects are boring. Etc, etc. It's not really a progressive show.

Although if you examine it from a meta perspective, you can chalk up all of it to Ted being an unreliable narrator and, since it's his skewed version of events that we see, he's the one who holds water with all these stereotypes. Ted's a jerk, I guess.

Isn't politeness the king of Canadian stereotypes? She definitely doesn't fit that one.

The Canada jokes are one of the few things I miss about this show, TBH.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-13 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Robin is awesome. This is a joke, right?

[identity profile] nomorenoodles.livejournal.com 2011-10-13 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Whatever the show's still awesome

[identity profile] danneeness.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
I find Canadian stereotypes hilarious. I mean, hockey, the Mounties, who can actually be offended by that? It's just silly, nothing to by offended by. Again, it's not like Canadians are an oppressed group.

[identity profile] alcetis.livejournal.com 2011-10-20 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I find the Canadian jokes hilarious because they're so obviously exaggerated. I mean, Canada having two weeks of Summer? It's funny because it's so obviously silly.
This is speaking as a Canadian currently missing Tim Horton's while living across the pond... I like the references. XD
Some of them sound like they're written by Americans, but some of them, like the Harvey's reference, sound like something someone in Canada would know.
And yeah, the actress is Canadian, so as long as she's having fun?
