Loads of Phantom fans have been saying the same thing for, oh, about 25 years.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-13 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I thought more people agreed with #31?

[identity profile] cdaae.livejournal.com 2011-10-13 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Both opinions are pretty much equally common in Phantom fandom, so I don't really see why either would need to be kept secret!

[identity profile] nemo-de-la-meer.livejournal.com 2011-10-13 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
This. Good job, lady.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-13 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
wait I thought you shipped E/C?

[identity profile] cdaae.livejournal.com 2011-10-13 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't say anything about what I ship, just pointed out that the OP's opinion is common in the Phantom fandom, and has been since it started. There have always been arguments about it, and there have always been people passionately agreeing with both sides.

[identity profile] kryss-labryn.livejournal.com 2011-10-14 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, myself, for example, I staunchly ship E/C; but I absolutely agree that Raoul is by far the better choice. I just identify mostly with Erik so I want him to have a happy ending, haha.

But I don't think Christine made the wrong choice by any means, and IRL, DUDE don't pick the Phantom! XD Screw what he looks like; he's a crazy, selfish, violent stalker. Not a good idea.

Not that Raoul is perfect, but jeez, handsome, rich, titled military man (he was in the French Navy, as you well know) who is willing to risk his life to save you and then walk away-- not the wrong choice.

[identity profile] nemo-de-la-meer.livejournal.com 2011-10-13 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
"He kills without a thought, he murders all that's good"

Hell yeah I'd choose Raoul.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-10-13 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Funny. I felt the EXACT opposite. I always understood that Erik/Christine was a problematic (yet interesting) dynamic. But this Raoul, to me, was somehow a class A, manipulative dick, and I wanted her to dump him ASAP, while this version of the Phantom seemed particularly sad and sympathetic. YMMV

[identity profile] dangerousdame.livejournal.com 2011-10-13 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Out of curiosity, how was Raoul more manipulative than the Phantom?

(Anonymous) 2011-10-13 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
he's not, but, he's in the position of privilege so has to live up to higher standards

[identity profile] dangerousdame.livejournal.com 2011-10-13 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure I understand. What standards does he fail?

(Anonymous) 2011-10-13 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
he fails at not being a manipulative dick
the phantom also fails at not being manipulative but as he's the oppressed rather than the privileged he's cut more slack for it

He's manipulative in different ways. It has always been in the story, but I thought the acting/chemistry really brought it out in the 25th anniversary edition.

For example, he basically coerces her to be "bait" for the phantom, while she clearly doesn't want to - she's scared and fears her safety. He guilt-trips her about not wearing his ring, while she has her reasons not to wear it. He also basically waltzes into her life, waiting to be welcomed back (and adored) while he hasn't seen her for years.

I'm not saying the Phantom is not manipulative - but he's basically been ridiculed and hated by everyone. Raoul had everything handed on a silver platter and well, he's still a dick.

[identity profile] dangerousdame.livejournal.com 2011-10-13 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I disagree, but I can see how different actors can give weight to different aspects. I may feel differently, but I can at least see where you're coming from.

[identity profile] masterfedora.livejournal.com 2011-10-13 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad somebody else saw that. Like you said below, I'm usually pretty indifferent to Raoul too but in this version he was just obnoxious.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-10-13 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yay for the Raoul love!

He's not really all that bad! I mean, he doesn't murder anyone, for one... >__>;;

[identity profile] dangerousdame.livejournal.com 2011-10-13 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Geoff Packard's Raoul was what won me over to the R/C side- nothing to be ashamed of.

[identity profile] amethyst-rei.livejournal.com 2011-10-13 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
I've never seen those two perform PoTO, so I can't really give an opinion.

Personally, I prefer Erik/Christine, even though I know it's not a healthy relationship. The first version of PoTO I saw was the 2004 film by ALW, and I was immediately turned off by Raoul and the guy who played him. Even though I've seen other versions, I've always just preferred E/C over E/R. Anyway, I'll definitely check out the play performed by... the people you mentioned. I'd like to see a play/movie where Raoul is actually likable/

[identity profile] mskye.livejournal.com 2011-10-13 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
I thought both men were dicks tbh. I suppose that Erik is still the worst choice, though. You know. Because of the murders.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-13 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
Add me to the "both are dicks" camp. I always read Christine (esp. book version) as being stuck walking the line between two crappy options and not knowing how to wriggle out of the whole mess entirely.

Awww for the sentiment and for saying nice things about Raoul in general.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-10-13 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
You're welcome. :)

(Anonymous) 2011-10-13 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. The Phantom is a murderer. I feel sorry for him but he actually killed people! That she knew! I'd run a mile from a guy like that irl.
