What do people expect? For the character to stand up, face the camera and say, "I am asexual"? In a society where the term isn't even correctly defined or understood in most circles? People deem him asexual because usually fictional characters are shown falling in love or in lust or in some sort of relationship with another person somewhere in the story. If the other person is of opposite sex they're deemed heterosexual, it not they're homosexual. If not falling in love or having sex ever isn't an indication of asexuality then please tell me how a character can be "shown" as asexual without "telling" it.

Well Sherlock does tell certain things about himself explicitly, at least in the BBC rendition. He explicitly self-diagnoses as a sociopath and he talks explicitly about what's interesting to him and what he couldn't care less about. Going on that, I expect that he'll address his sexuality explicitly in the future. People just gotta wait for it.
