The only reason why you have 'asexuality' (and the luxury of claiming your own oppression while slut shaming the rest of us) is because of neo-liberalism. In normal societies, people aren't too bogged down in consumerism to fuck.

I like that for once a character with an unspecified sexuality isn't being defaulted to 'heterosexual'. Though it would be nicer if it wasn't seen as another aspect of his general weirdness.

I don't really think he's asexual but there's not indication that he isn't asexual. I think it's kinda silly when people get so intense over his sexuality. There's no evidence on EITHER side. The fact that he tells John he's not interested in a relationship doesn't automatically mean he's asexual. It could mean that but it could also just mean he's not freaking interested in a relationship. Sometimes people go through phases where they want relationships and phases when they don't.

Taking one stance or another for the sake of fic is cool but going crazy over it is just ridiculous.

In case you aren't just trying to stir RAEG: It's harder to pick up on alternate sexualities or a lack of sexuality in not explicitly or implicitly stated heterosexual characters if you personally or someone close to you haven't experienced them.

The clumsy conversation at the diner seems to indicate that, at the very least, he's not someone who dates or has interest in dating. Or sex.

I don't think he's asexual, but I think getting angry over such an interpretation is somewhat ridiculous. Some people think he's asexual. Some people think he's hot for John/Molly/Moriarty/Mycroft. Others think he is exactly what he claimed--someone too busy for relationships. All interpretations are equally valid, so calm down, OP.

IIRC, it's been stated a few times in interviews with the creators, and BC said that he had interpreted Sherlock as asexual and played him as such. (If I'm mistaken, please tell me, but I'm fairly sure that's correct.)

For some, it's also a holdover from the ACD stories to an extent, where Watson said at the beginning of A Scandal in Bohemia that Holmes was "the most perfect reasoning and observing machine that the world has seen, but as a lover... would have placed himself in a false position" and that "he never spoke of the softer passions, save with a gibe and a sneer".

Well I hate when random characters are claimed to be gay when canon shows them only interested in the opposite sex. At least there's nothing contradicting him being asexual.

I see him as being like Batman- he's not necessarily completed uninterested in sex, but it's just so far down on his priority list that he pretty much never thinks about it.

What do people expect? For the character to stand up, face the camera and say, "I am asexual"? In a society where the term isn't even correctly defined or understood in most circles? People deem him asexual because usually fictional characters are shown falling in love or in lust or in some sort of relationship with another person somewhere in the story. If the other person is of opposite sex they're deemed heterosexual, it not they're homosexual. If not falling in love or having sex ever isn't an indication of asexuality then please tell me how a character can be "shown" as asexual without "telling" it.

I agree it's completely possible for a person to choose to abstain from sex for reasons other than being asexual. And in fact, Sherlock's view of his body makes for a good intellectual reason not to pursue sex rather than an inherent lack of interest in sex. After all, he seems to have more or less the same view of eating that he does for sex (it's a distraction from his puzzle solving), and you can't blame that on asexuality.

But I think the fun of fandom is to read into the character what you want, and asexuality would certainly make it easier to abstain.

Or in other words, people can choose to see him as asexual or not as they wish and it's no skin off my nose.

Dude[tte], there are Sherlockians and scholars that have been researching/studying/proposing the Holmes=Asexual thing for friggin' decades. There's a lot of evidence to support it in the Canon and from ACD himself. If BBC's Sherlock is based on this character, chances are there's going to be a evidence to support it in BBC Sherlock too.

OK, at the beginning of this I was so confused – I thought it was pretty much universally accepted that he’s asexual! But, reading this thread, I guess not so much. Anyway, for what it’s worth, in the unaired pilot that comes on the Sherlock BBC DVD set (maybe just in the UK? Not sure), the scene where they are in the restaurant is extended, as is the conversation about dating and sexuality. Holmes says “Sex isn’t…” And Watson picks it up, saying “It isn’t what?” And Sherlock replies “It just isn’t.” Now, you could read this as “proof” that Sherlock is asexual. OR you could read the fact that it was cut as “proof” that the producers decided not to go that route. It’s true that different people will read things different ways. But here’s my thought: OP, really? REALLY?

C’mon. The fact that he never dated anyone, or showed any signs of attraction to anyone EVER in the books is a pretty solid “indication” to me that someone *could* be asexual.
