What about if, when Sherlock said "It was 14 years ago, why would she still be upset?", you agreed with him/were equally confused? Or seriously don't get why Molly was so upset when Sherlock told her that her new boyfriend was gay? Or was on his side when he pointed out caring about the bombing victims is pointless? Or any other of his "sociopath" moments?

*genuinely unsure about whether or not those reactions are normal; half of fandom tells me Sherlock probably does have some sort of mental disorder, the other half says "Well he does have a point", and every time I try to ask for a more definitive/less fanficcy answer people scream TROLL at me*

I didn't study Psychology, so I couldn't tell you for sure if that's sociopathy, but those comments show a lack of empathy. There are different degrees of empathy. Some people only care about themselves, their family and their close friends (this is most people, to tell you the truth), other extend those circles to not so close friends and acquaintances (another huge chunk of people), others extend them to everyone they meet personally (a little rarer), yet other extend them to anyone they don't know personally (I think it's actually a little easier to sympathize with people whose faults you don't know and haven't failed you or hurt you personally), others extend them to people in the past and people who haven't been born yet and might not be born (like environmentalists and those who bring up the "think of the children" argument), and, and this is rarer of all, contrary to what people would have you think, those who can feel empathy for anyone and everyone, real or fictional. These are the people others mock for being "oversensitive".

There is something else to take into account: the younger you are, the harder you might find it to empathize with other people, either because you haven't experienced yourself the pain that of specific experiences of theirs, or because you still need to grow up some more (children sound like sociopath at times, by virtue of the fact that it doesn't always occurs to them to put themselves in the shoes of the others, metaphorically speaking, until a bit later on when they are older).

This topic isn't as simple as people make it out to be, but I'm certain that if you want to learn more, you could benefit from picking up Psychology books. They explain this things in an easier to understand way, and if you are uncertain about your own mind, they could help you a lot. There are many different currents, and there are disagreements about what types of Psychology are correct and which ones are incorrect, so don't take them all as The Absolute Truth That Cannot Be Challenged Ever, but they are a place to start if you want to learn more about this.

I should also mention that the internet is not always reliable, and that fandom often involves feelings that keep people from being impartial when discussing this, so don't be alarmed by the contradicting opinions you kept hearing. Not all of us think the same way, and as long as you don't hurt anyone or yourself (either physically or emotionally, and honestly, it's much, much harder to tell when you hurt someone emotionally, so keep an eye on that and read more about this topic!), you are probably doing it all right. Good luck, anon!

The anon above me explained the whole empathy issue better than I could, and honestly, you shouldn't worry about not being able to relate to fictional characters and/or people you haven't met yet with troubles you haven't experienced yet.

Thing is, sociopathy is a personality disorder, a severe one, and it mainly expresses itself through complete disregard for the law and human rights, as in, you see nothing wrong with stealing or killing, and lack of remorse if you happen to have hurt someone, even people "close" to you like your mother or siblings.
Needless lying just for the hell of it and extreme irritability are part of it, too.

So if you don't feel like you could chop your mum up and bury her in your backgarden without feeiling any guilt, you are probably not a sociopath, you just have a very low empathy quotient.

Now, I'm not a psychologist and I can't say this is true for sure so I suggest you pick up some books on the subject, too.
