The anon above me explained the whole empathy issue better than I could, and honestly, you shouldn't worry about not being able to relate to fictional characters and/or people you haven't met yet with troubles you haven't experienced yet.

Thing is, sociopathy is a personality disorder, a severe one, and it mainly expresses itself through complete disregard for the law and human rights, as in, you see nothing wrong with stealing or killing, and lack of remorse if you happen to have hurt someone, even people "close" to you like your mother or siblings.
Needless lying just for the hell of it and extreme irritability are part of it, too.

So if you don't feel like you could chop your mum up and bury her in your backgarden without feeiling any guilt, you are probably not a sociopath, you just have a very low empathy quotient.

Now, I'm not a psychologist and I can't say this is true for sure so I suggest you pick up some books on the subject, too.
