I agree completely, OP. I tried to feel sad about it, but I just kept getting distracted by how stupid Seita was. (Really? You're going to live in a cave and take care of yourself and your little sister when you know fully well the infrastructure is falling apart all around you?)

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Well the whole point wasn't to show the tragedy and awfulness of war, I thought, but to show the inhumanity of the indifference everyone showed toward the children's plight. Those kids could have been starving, and Seita could have run away, for literally any reason - disaster, famine, troubled home life, etc., and the result would have been the same. Children are stupid and people suck.

What else was he supposed to do? I mean, really lmao.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Suck it up an go live with his aunt?

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
This. And yes, he was old enough to make better decisions.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
You mean his abusive aunt, if my memory serves me? The one who didn't care
about him or his sister and wanted nothing to do with them?

Who probably wouldn't have kept him any safer?

It was boring. They show the main character's death and the little girl as a ghost right at the beginning of the film, so you know they're both going to die. There's no tension. You're sitting around waiting for them to starve the whole film.

[identity profile] angary.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
ITA. I think that's why I couldn't get past the first 15 minutes. I can see why other people would like the movie, but I couldn't get into it, and the beginning/ending was a big part of that.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
YANA, OP. I didn't find it moving either, just horrible.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Out of curiosity, OP, do you have any siblings? I'm honestly just curious, and I'm not going to judge you either way. The reason the movie was just so heart-breaking for me personally is because I'm an older sister and I'm REALLY close to my little sister and I'm pretty protective of her. So things dealing with siblings taking care of each other hit close to home for me.

That, and the movie was really sad, IMO.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
I have a little brother that I'm very protective of and I still found it dull as dishwater because we know from the opening sequence that he's going to fail. There's no drama. We're waiting for the inevitable.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Fair enough, I was just wondering if it was just me. I'm also a serial movie crier and a sap for this sort of thing, so that was for sure part of it.
ext_81845: penelope, my art/character (bored)

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
I have three younger sisters and I still found this movie boring

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
Fair enough. I was just wondering if that was the reason it made me cry like I did. But it's probably just because I'm really sappy in general XD.

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I have a little sister (though she is only two years younger than me) and perhaps that's why I couldn't connect with the movie. I didn't understand Seita's motivation for leaving the aunt and putting his sister in such a life-threatening situation (which eventually ended up killing her).

I agree with fenm - he should have just sucked it up and remained with his aunt. Was she horrible? Yes. But at least she fed them and kept a roof over their head. They wouldn't have starved to death out of sheer stupidity. The whole movie was just a frustrating, dull mess and didn't achieve what I think it set out to achieve.

[identity profile] shah-of-blah.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. The people I was with said I was a bad person because I didn't cry. For the record, I cry at movies all the time, and I have a sibling whom I love dearly. But I still found the movie trite and unmoving.

[identity profile] mrtoulouse.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
No apologies necessary, it really didn't strike a chord with me either. I expected it to be some great, moving, epic movie, but it was as interesting to me as watching wallpaper peel. Really isn't helped any that we know from the start what the outcome of the movie is, I was expecting something... More.
ext_81845: screencap of dusty attenborough with a thoughtful expression, also STUBBLE, from legend of the galactic heroes (think it over)

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't like it either. I've said this before, but I think the manga Barefoot Gen was much better and did a better job with actually delving into the history of what happened instead of being a sappy BAWWWWfest (it also manages to be ten times more disturbing than GotF)

I think this makes me less of a heartless jerk and more someone with discerning taste that prefers good writing over a story that is basically just "these kids die"

[identity profile] starphotographs.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
You know, I like Grave of the Fireflies and all, but from what I remember of both movies, I liked Barefoot Gen just as much and think it's kinda sad that it got overshadowed.

[identity profile] elica.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
So if you like GotF you're stupid ?
Cool.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 11:21 am (UTC)(link)
Somewhat off-topic, but I see you around f!s quite a bit, and I've noticed you tend to interpret all comments in the least charitable, least hospitable way humanly poss--

Oh, you're French.

Well.

Carry on.

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
You're stupid for taking a comment about why I prefer one work of fiction over the other as a personal attack, yeah

[identity profile] amidoh.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 10:47 am (UTC)(link)
Personally, I like both GotF and Barefoot Gen. They're dealing with different events in the war (GotF is the Kobe firebombing and Gen is the Hiroshima bombing, unless I'm much mistaken) and they're both semi-autobiographical. For me, when I remember that the author actually went through these experiences, it makes it a lot more powerful than if I just view them as war films.

[identity profile] katerayearth.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 11:21 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, same. And usually I'm all for sad movies.
