I agree completely, OP. I tried to feel sad about it, but I just kept getting distracted by how stupid Seita was. (Really? You're going to live in a cave and take care of yourself and your little sister when you know fully well the infrastructure is falling apart all around you?)

Well the whole point wasn't to show the tragedy and awfulness of war, I thought, but to show the inhumanity of the indifference everyone showed toward the children's plight. Those kids could have been starving, and Seita could have run away, for literally any reason - disaster, famine, troubled home life, etc., and the result would have been the same. Children are stupid and people suck.

Not abusive, just kind of a jerk. But, gee, jerk aunt who gives you shelter and FOOD, vs. living out in a cave, and not having any food...

Oh, and yes, the aunt wasn't nice, but she's not exactly living in the luxury herself, so she saw the kids as two more moths she could barely food. But she WAS feeding them.

She was also trying to get him off his ass. She repeatedly said she was saving the best portions for those contributing to the war effort, and that he was old enough to contribute, and too old to sit at home doing nothing. She also very clearly expected him to come back when he got hungry enough; all of the adults seem to, including the man he tries to sell his stolen goods to that says "swallow your pride and go back to your aunt".

But he wouldn't, and his sister died for it.

The intent was for people to recognize that Seita's excessive pride played a role in his suffering, which, iirc, was meant as a subtle condemnation of Japan itself by the writer. I seem to recall the author was distressed when people claimed they admired Seita's resolve, since that sort of misses the point. Arrgh, where did I read that?! I guess my point is that you're supposed to be frustrated with Seita.

On the other hand, he is just a child, they're not known for making the best decisions.
