I don't think they're uncomfortable with at all. There's not really any androgyny there. It's a woman.

[identity profile] marshwiggledyke.livejournal.com 2011-10-16 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
It might be a woman playing the character, but the character insists that their name comes with masculine signifiers. It muddies the gender waters, and since the short itself is terrible, it's difficult to find any clarity about what the short's producers intended (besides selling a lot of tubas).

Neutrois?

[identity profile] marshwiggledyke.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's otherwise known as agender or genderless (under the broader umbrella of genderqueer)? I'm not an expert, but it seems to be hotly debated in those circles about the differences between terms.

OP, since it's your identity, could you enlighten us properly as to your definition? My google skills are a fail. :)

OP

A neutrois is a gender-neutral person. You were correct the first time, except that some people consider it a third gender and some consider it a null state. Most neutrois are MtN or FtN rather than biologically neutered, the trouble with transitioning to a body devoid of sexual characteristics dissuades most neutrois from getting surgery.

She's dead, Jim.

I find their riffing on the genderscrew vaguely uncomfortable, myself, but given how conservative Mike Nelson is in real life, I'm not really surprised. And the '50s convention of representing male fae with female actors is a little risible in retrospect.

That's the part I always thought they were making fun of.

[identity profile] time-ambassador.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, this. It's like watching the Peter Pan stuff where Peter gets cast as a grown-ass woman. It's just...weird, and vaguely wrong.

[identity profile] eiviiaru.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I can see it both ways myself. I'll freely admit to occasionally being made uncomfortable by the riffs that clearly play on Mike's conservativism, but I do think this is less riffing on the androgyny and more riffing on "Mr. B Natural" clearly being an actress, along with the general weirdness of the short. (Let's face it, even if Mr. B Natural had been played by a non-androgynous man, or played by the same actress and been Miss B Natural, the character still would have been the same creepy elf-thing.)

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
The same creepy elf-thing hawking brass band instruments. The sudden commercialism halfway through the piece is the most riffworthy thing for me, and they barely touch on it. Seriously, who thought a Peter Pan expy was an appropriate commercial spokesman for a marching band manufacturer?

[identity profile] marshwiggledyke.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember really laughing hard at this as a kid. Rewatching it as an adult...

I was mildly uncomfortable by the nervous giggling of the three but got through it by telling myself, yeah, there's a rather forward adult in a teenager's room, this is kind of weird- and then they got nasty with the 'ex-cuuuse ME mr. sexless man-woman.'

Yuck. You're absolutely right, OP.

OP again

(Anonymous) 2011-10-16 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Strangely enough, I actually find the term "sexless man-woman" inspiring rather than insulting—it was how I described my identity to people before I learned the proper word for it. Most of the other comments made me uncomfortable.

I'm glad you find affirmation in it! And thank you for your clarification to my other comment upthread! I've not heard much on the subject of agender/neutrois, and I'd love to learn more from that website you linked! *reading now*

Mostly for me it's the fact that it's said with such disgust. Everything before that point was said to the over-the-top enthusiasm of Mr B, or the fact that it's obviously an underage teen that Mr B is being physically affectionate with, but that was the first mention they'd really made of the perceived gender 'wrongness' of Mr B. I was fine with the attraction confusion, but the disgust is something else entirely.

Did you watch their riff on The Violent Years? (It's the one where a group of women apparently rape a man.) I am so ashamed I once thought that episode was funny. It's hard to admit a show you like is problematic, especially this one, since you think you should be able to count on Mike/Joel and the bots to point out racism/sexism/etc in movies. I still watch and enjoy MST3K as most episodes are awesome, but I'm a lot more critical than I was back then.

[identity profile] kryptoncat.livejournal.com 2011-10-16 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Forgot to add: The reason I find that episode isn't funny is because they are insinuating the man should be enjoying the situation; and that's definitely not how they would have riffed it had it been a man about to rape a woman.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-16 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
What was uncomfortable was him hiding in the kid's locker, randomly popping up in his room, and generally being a creeper.

That said, Mr.B and MST3K secret ftw!

[identity profile] finn-is-bound.livejournal.com 2011-10-16 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Could someone, please, tell me what the title the short is (that the secret is referring to)?
I was introduced to MST3K about six months ago - that being said, I haven't had a chance to watch all of the episodes yet (shorts included). I'd like to know what exactly went on, so that I can have the full picture.

If someone could tell me, I'd appreciate it - and, if I can find it online, I'll come back, and write down my own thoughts about the riffs, and the secret.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-16 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
The short is titled "Mr. B Natural," and precedes the movie War of the Colossal Beast in the nineteenth episode of the third season of MST3K. You can find the short by itself on YouTube. Although the short is one of the most famous subjects ever featured on the series, it's also one of the few that show that the Satellite of Love captives aren't quite as enlightened as we fans often like to think. The character of Mr. B is undeniably creepy, but...well, you'll see.

[identity profile] dangerousdame.livejournal.com 2011-10-16 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno- the point wasn't that Mr. B was androgynous and that was wrong, it was that he was supposed to be a man and clearly wasn't.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-16 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
You're over thinking things. MST is not srs bsns.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-16 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
How many really stupid new words are we gonna make up, man?
