The LJ fandom is much less hateful, as far as I've seen, but it comes at the price of not having the people with production info.

Truth be told, some of the nastiness I've seen has been on LJ too, though the other boards are indeed the worst by far.

I'm also not really much of a fic person, nor a slasher, so those comms don't really interest me, and everything else on LJ I've been able to find has been dead for months or even years. Know of anything worthwhile that isn't dead?

I have yet to find one fandom that isn't like that.
And I'd even suspect that, the more idealistic and chipper the canon is, the more fans act like selfish pests. Someone should study the phenomenon.

Sorry to hear that. I haven't come across that toooooo much on LJ fandom, but I suspect I am playing in very different fields than you are if you're not into fic or slash. (Not that's all that interests me, but it's where I hang out on LJ.) However, even within just that area, I agree that there have definitely be more closed-mindedness than I expected about certain things.

I guess all I can suggest is just trying to stir up the dead comms yourself, or start your own and try to promote it to get more interest? What are you looking for? Just general discussion?

I remember being told a few years ago that I shouldn't be part of a certain LJ comm because of how "horrible" and "cruel" the people there could be. What that person didn't know was that I had already been part of some of the Power Rangers boards which made that comm a dream come true for me. I have NEVER encountered such abuse than I did there.

My own secret for this? I was even a mod for a while on one of those boards. And it was still that bad. Either you were in a clique, and therefore loved, or you weren't. Mod or not.

Late reply is late, sorry. While I feel naming names will lessen my anon status - I'll simply say that the main board I was on and a temporary mod of was one that typically went by three initials, not two. And this was a fair number of years ago.

I don't have much to say that hasn't been already other than:

A) Uh, wtf is "drunken escapades at cons" doing in the middle of a list of otherwise awful fandom behavior? Seriously. I don't think I've ever heard of people hating on anyone but the drunks.

Do people really hate on entire fandoms because some people who like the show got drunk at a con? Is that really a thing? Because that would be super disappointing.

B) I am curious about this nepotism thing because I've run into everything else on this list and follow LJ and RB (I can't go to all the boards, they are awful, and I've heard RB is least worst. I LIKE STORIES ABOUT WHAT THE CREATIVE STAFF GO THROUGH, OKAY. Plus, nobody in LJland seems to find the rumors before the boards.) and I honestly have no idea what it's about.

Sadly, I've noticed there's a lot of crap like that in just about every fandom. It's why I've started kinda limiting myself to just the LJ comms these days, and even then, I lurk around for a while until I can gauge how crazy the crazy is and if there's sanity to balance it out. And it's why I don't have a lot of fandom places for any of my fandoms.

I loved the original show but never thought to look the fandom up. It's a shame if it's really this bad but I could see people fighting over stupid shit like which gen is better and so forth.

But, rewatching the first season as an adult, the Power Rangers themselves are a clique of popular kids who pick on Bulk and Skull. It starts out not so bad, then it gets mean. Bulk and Skull lose all their friends from the first few episodes, are victimised and mocked pretty viciously no matter what they do, and yet they keep trying to improve their lives and skills, and are pretty heroic at times.

Try just watching the Bulk and Skull scenes (I know there was a Yoitube channel for this a while ago), and see what it looks like from their point of view. Power Rangers fans are emulating the heroes of the show.

Really? PR has been one of the nicest fandoms I've ever been in. I tend to ship crazy off the wall pairings or wacky crossover pairings, but I've never had anyone get mean about it with me.

I haven't witnessed ANY of that on either RangerCrew or Rangerboard. The fandom there is pretty peaceful. I don't know where you were when you saw all that nastiness, but it's not in any parts of the fandom I've been in.
