Cartman has friends?

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
kyle, stan, kenny when alive...

[identity profile] time-ambassador.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Kyle always goes out of his way to tell Cartman they're not friends, though.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
For most of the show they go everywhere together, do everything together, and act like friends in every way.

[identity profile] mondaisenshi.livejournal.com 2011-10-16 10:45 am (UTC)(link)
Not... entirely, no. Whenever it's down to just Kyle and Cartman, they're very clear about their mutual hatred: Cartman hates everyone, but his excuse for hating Kyle is that he's Jewish; Kyle hates antisemitic bastards and generally bad people. They're just part of the same circles.

Stan knows that Cartman's an inexcusable bastard and just tolerates him. Kenny gets along with him a lot more (except when he picks on Kenny's poverty), but Kenny gets along with everyone fine... and seems drawn to dysfunction. Butters sees Cartman as this cool kid that everyone respects, regardless of the truth, and often follows him like a puppydog.

Cartman... sees Kyle and Kenny as people he can make fun of, which makes him feel better about himself, and also legitimately enjoys Kenny's sense of humor when Kenny's not picking on him. He sees Butters as someone he can manipulate, Stan as someone that will help him and back him up for loyalty or good-heartedness or some other screwed up process.

Honestly, I think Cartman's only actual friend is Kenny. The rest are just... associates that he hangs out with. Colleagues. Allies...? Pretty sure "friend" is a faulty syllogism and a misnomer... basically... just because friends hang out and Cartman hangs out with this group, that doesn't mean that the group members are friends. Cartman's not big on friends. Friendships take work and effort to maintain. Friendships, when tested, can fail. He doesn't want that. He wants his way. Right now. And forever.

Kyle is just tsundere.

Snerk.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I, actually, think my life would be WAY better if I was more like Cartman in a LOT of ways so I get this, OP, I get this

[identity profile] finmagik.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
What the hell?! He's an evil little fucker!

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
but, at least he has self confidence and self esteem

[identity profile] finmagik.livejournal.com 2011-10-16 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
I worked with kids and there was kid in my program last year a lot like Cartman. All ego, bullying and lies. He had no friends, he didn't even know it! All the other kids (the ones he couldn't push around) just rolled their eyes at him. Ad he never had day with us where he behaved. I spent the whole year trying to find SOMETHING I liked about him and failed. It was terrible.

most likely troll, but I'll bite

"he has self-confidence, self-esteem and friends"

Erm, have we been watching the same show? Kyle, Stan and Kenny don't care much about Cartman, and it seems that it's Cartman who seeks them out -or they hang out with him because his mom buys him cool stuff or to watch his tv; Cartman crumbles emotionally -and sometimes physically- whenever things don't go his way because he is an insecure, immature, manipulative fuck; and, while he is self-centered and egotistical, he appears to overcompensate for his perceived faults -a person with self-esteem does not insist that he is better than everyone else at every given opportunity.

If you are looking for fictional characters to emulate, South Park is not for you, OP.

Yes, mostly likely troll... but thanks for writing exactly what I wanted to say! I was wondering if I was watching the same show as some of the other people commenting here.

I'm not sure what to think about people who respect/admire/want to be like Cartman. Either they're way too immature to understand what Cartman is. Or they understand and don't care and still like him anyways, which is rather worrying. There isn't any redeeming quality about Cartman.

lol, thank God it wasn't just me. I was worrying a little too.

I figure that they just see a boy doing whatever he wants regardless of what other people think and they wish they could get away with doing the same. But that's the thing: in real life, that doesn't work in the long run, or sometimes not even in the short and medium runs. There are social norms for a reason; we don't condone disregarding other people's rights for a reason.

One thing is being assertive, and not letting others walk all over you, but what Cartman does is walk over others to get his way. So, by trying to emulate him, you are just going from one extreme to the other, instead of finding your own happy medium where you don't actively step over others but don't let others step over you either.

It also bothers me that people think Cartman's relationship with the other boys is in any way, shape or form a valid version of friendship: Cartman and the other three tolerate each other at most, but their relationship is not healthy at all. He is sorta needed in the cartoon as the catalyst for a lot of the crazy plots that go on, or to solve the madness with his own brand of madness, but irl? No, not something to want to aspire to or want to be satisfied with just because "Eric Cartman from South Park" can get away with it.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-16 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I relate. I try really hard to be accommodating and don't always express myself well because I worry what people will think. Cartman takes what he wants. I admire that.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-16 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
And yet he fails at the end. He is clearly not happy with himself. I think taking a little of Cartman's assertiveness and apply it to your life wouldn't be bad, but he takes that trait to an exaggeration and turns it into abuse and manipulation.
ext_81845: the character ray person from generation kill, squinting and smiling/smirking (yeah... no.)

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2011-10-16 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
He doesn't really have friends, just other people who tolerate him. He doesn't really have self-esteem either, he just boasts a lot and talks big, and makes fun of other people in a feeble attempt to make himself feel better. Seriously, watch the Casa Bonita episode
