As an author I wouldn't want to pair my characters off with people I couldn't develop in the story because it just feels like short-changing the audience. Showing character relationships and how these people affected each others' lives during the hard times they lived through is the trade-off I'd take (and prefer to see)for realism. I'm not saying that Rowling did an amazing job with relationships, but seriously now.

I definitely believe that, but that point is more open to interpretation and what the reader thinks would happen to a person after going through such an event. That's why I think it comes down to story-telling license what the author chooses to do with relationships. Post-war romances can be researched, but since we're talking about fictional characters, it mostly comes down to what the author wants to express in their story.
Haha, I'm really not saying Rowling did wonderfully. Mostly, she did pretty bad (I didn't like Harry/Ginny either), but that an author chooses to only pair cast characters is a complaint I see a lot (mostly aimed at fantasy kids/teens series, for some reason), and it makes me go, Umm, really? The way the romances are written is definitely up for criticism, but it's most likely just bad writing, not that the author seriously believes that is how relationships go, or some subconscious... trauma, or something.

As a writer, I agree that it'd be hard to introduce new characters at the very end. I don't think it was a bad move necessarily, but I don't think it was good either. And I agree that post-war, bonds aren't necessarily going to be love. It might be that Harry and Ginny came to agree to just be friends, but it was a very close friendship. Hell, I always found more evidence to Luna and Harry than Ginny and Harry. Luna seemed to see Harry, not the celebrity she'd crushed on since shew as a young girl. I think that's also what bothers me about Harry and Ginny. It never seemed really real, as far as the romance of it went.

It's sometimes a trade off and it's up to the author which one they want to favor more strongly, but I certainly don't think it's an author's fault that they wrote something a little unrealistic because it feels better from the perspective of the story being told.
