Or you could not have an epilogue and leave it open ended, but, you know.

That's what I would've liked--there are certain stories where I want everything wrapped up tidily, but Harry Potter felt too big for that. It's personal preference, but I think a well done opened ended ending is a beautiful thing.

the epilogue shouldn't have existed, and Rowling shouldn't have given in to fan pressure about answering who ended up with whom outside of what we saw in the books

that way everyone would be happier: you just pretend that your pairing stayed together or broke up and then got together with whom you wanted, depending on your ship

Or you could not care about what canon says about pairings and go on your merry, very grown-up way?

I don't care about it myself, I'm talking about the raaaage they caused in fandom and that keeps spilling and spilling and spilling over

what I mean is, I prefer open endings, less hurt feelings that way

Books aren't written to appease fandom. You're just a small part of the target audience.

TBH I think most people actually just feel that way because of fandom. An open end is better for fandom.

But Rowling isn't writing for fandom. It's only a tiny part of her readership. The epilogue was very, very popular among the general reading audience.

ayrt

I disagree that most people feel that way (about the epilogue) because of fandom--but maybe only because I know I don't, though I can't say that I speak for the majority. So you might be right. Still--

I have a pretty well-established appreciation of open-ended endings in books that I have no intention of ever writing fanfiction for; and I think it lessens the series impact to say 'and here we are 15 (?) years later, and everything's neat and tidy!' It returns the story--which Rowling had allowed to grow with the characters and readers--to the domain of a children's book. Which is fine, maybe that's what she wanted to do to temper some of the darkness in the later books, and it's fine if people appreciate it.

tl;dr: An open end is better for fandom, sure, but there are other reasons to support it as well.
