Well, to be fair, a lot of the fanbase would have lost their shit if their beloved characters ended up with no-name people that weren't in the novels.

It's not terribly realistic how everyone ended up with their high school sweethearts, but that's also the best "happy ending" the books could have gotten, not to mention the one that made the readers happy. I don't think most would have been thrilled to read the epilogue and discover that Harry ended up with Gryffindor #15 or whatever. The characters experienced waaaay more than most kids could ever dream, so they grew up a lot and, as such, their views on that are going to differ more than that of the average teenager. Again, it's not realistic compared to how most of us do things, but this is Harry Potter. It's not going to be realistic.

Actually, few of them ended up with their high school sweethearts. Harry/Ginny, Ron/Hermione, Molly/Arthur, and Lily/James are the ones I can think of. But the rest... Bill/Fleur, Luna/Rolf, Neville/Hannah, Tonks/Remus, Draco/Astoria, Percy/Audrey, George/Angelina, and others I can't think of right now were never together at school, only years after, and some weren't even classmates with one another.

Oh, add Lucius/Narcissa to the HS sweethearts. I'm assuming they dated at Hogwarts. Maybe Bellatrix/Rodolphus but I wouldn't call them sweethearts in any case since she pretty much married him for his status while she drooled over Voldemort.
