Yes. This. It always pissed me off that Snape stayed so obsessed with Lily. It made no sence.

I think to a point, it really does. He hurt her and was guilty, then he went one--okay maybe like a hundred steps further and ended up getting her killed. I think he held on to the guilt more than any romantic feelings. He was a bitter person though.

People do hold on to their past loves quite often and they were young when they died. And Snape didn't have the best childhood as we know. Lily was his best friend and the girl he loved for a long time, then he fucked up, never got to make amends, then fucked up even worse.

Yea, I get that. It just really annoyed me that he never got the chance to move on. That he was always stuck feeling an insurmountable amount of guilt.

I can understand that, but some people do hold on to those things. And in a way, it's good he did hold on to that because without him trying to atone or whatever he was trying to do, things would have gone very differently.

I feel for Snape, despite him being an abusive asshole, but I think he also let himself hold on to his guilt. I think he could have chosen to move on or heal from it, but never wanted to.
