I didn't find Snape and Lily creepy - just bothersome. I felt like she was short-changing Snape, as if no one would have believed he truly had a change of heart without some woman to instigate it. I would have found it much more powerful if Snape had had an honest change of heart, where he realized what he was doing was wrong because it was hurting people, not because Voldemort was going to hurt ONE person.

As for the pairing off - it bothered me greatly. I've been a fan since I was 10 and, frankly, I would have actually been happy if they'd not ended up with the people I knew they'd end up with since book 1. No, they didn't have to be paired off with people we didn't know. There were plenty of other characters we knew and appreciated that could have become love interests - Luna or Neville for example. Admittedly, I'm a Drarry reader, but in the books, I would have been pleasantly surprised if Harry had ended up with Luna and Ginny with Dean or other combinations thereof. I feel like the pairing off was contrived and watered down Ginny's character, just using her for a love interest and a way to integrate Harry into the Weasleys further.

I think the point of Snape is that he isn't a nice person though. He was abused--not that that justifies his actions--and hated his life. He hated people on the whole. I think it shows how selfish he truly was that his change of heart came not from some inner need to do right but because of the woman he betrayed.

As far as pairing off goes, I'm a H/D shipper too, but as far as canon, I'd never expect it to happen, nor would I want it to canonically. Before H/D, I was an H/L shipper and I think that would have been ten times better. Ginny being written for Harry's love interest ruined everything about her so completely that after the fifth book I just found her bothersome. Before the fifth book, she didn't even register on my radar. Luna had more development in three books than Ginny had in seven--well, I guess six since she really didn't play a role at all in the first.

Luna had development? I must have missed it.

She had more than Ginny.

*Snorts* Everyone has more character development than Ginny.

Not true. Luna certainly didn't - she's so cartoonish it's ridiculous. I find it laughable that people claim she's a developed character, please. Seriously there are many underdeveloped characters but none of them ended up with Harry and so no one gives a shit.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-16 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Don 't forget Draco. Fandom says he's developed but what??? He started getting some dimensionality at the end of HBP but that was about it. So yeah, false comment is false.

THIS.

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2011-10-16 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
MTE. I love Luna, but there's wasn't much character development when it came to her. She didn't change much.

[identity profile] amethyst-rei.livejournal.com 2011-10-16 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it was very important for Luna to have much character development, tbh. Her role in the series was minimal and not very significant. Ginny, however, as the main character's future spouse, really should have been developed better. She did change quite a lot from her 11 year old self--obviously, as it's called "growing up"-- but aside from that... nothing.

And you're right. No one gives a damn about the other minor underdeveloped characters because they didn't marry the main character. What involves the main character involves the reader, y'know?

(Anonymous) 2011-10-16 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I disagree. I find her to be a very one dimensional character who serves no purpose and has one facet. I know people will disagree but imo compared to the young kids, even Fred and George had more development than her and they have like nothing.

Never mind the fact that the books showed that Ginny and Dean weren't good together or the fact that Harry found Luna laughable, pitied her and was not attracted to her? I get not wanting people to end up with childhood sweethearts but in place of people the books showed didn't work? No thanks.

Harry found Luna laughable, pitied

Harry certainly did find her weird but he didn't find her laughable and the pitying did stop, if not before but definitely when they found the mural on her ceiling.

Harry did consider her a friend though and a good person.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-16 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yes he did consider a friend and a nice person but no where did he state he was attracted to her or describe her in flattering terms. A lot of the times he'd be laughing at Luna and her interests and my point was that it just doesn't seem like there was ever going to be anything between them.

But then I think that painting on her ceiling was creepy.

Ugh, this. My headcanon had always been that upon joining the DE, Snape had to commit/witness atrocities so vile that he realized that he didn't want power that badly and decided to spend the rest of his life atoning for his sins. That would have been quite enough, IMO.

Nope, just lovesick! Sigh.

[identity profile] rattyrayvn.livejournal.com 2011-10-16 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. I was probably supposed to cry, but I just raised an eyebrow at my copy of DH and thought, "Are you serious?"
