The correct pronuciation would be Yow (rhymes with now) -E (the name of the letter).

Idk how to pronounce "yowwie"; to me it looks like "yo-wee" but... yeah.

/foreign language and interpretation major; trilingual (includes japanese)

Except you don't emphasize the "w" sound. If anything, it's "yah-oh-ee" said really quickly.

With that being said, I doubt the average Japanese person gives a crap how Westerners pronounce certain words. It seems to be mostly weaboos who get offended when some words are said slightly wrong.

Do people emphasize the "w" sound when saying "now"? I know I don't. I'd have to disagree that it's "yah-oh-ee" because even when you say that quickly, it simply does not blend together the way japanese words traditionally do.

But yeah, I agree with you on that one. Japanese people don't tend to give a fuck how the word is said; they seem happy enough that a foreigner would even try and speak japanese. That said, I want to be an interpreter, so prononciation is rather important, and if people aren't sure on how to say a word, I like to help them.
(also, just to be clear, I'm not a weeaboo; I speak english, spanish, japanese, and I'm working on farsi, indonesian, french, and mandrin, so... yeah).

I guess it depends on the accent. "Yowie" is an Australian word and we emphasize the hell out of the "w". It's more like "Yow-wee".

I'd say yah-oh-ee is pronounced practically the same (with my Aussie accent), but with less emphasis on the "w" sound in the middle. Like, your lips don't come quite as close together when you say "yaoi" as opposed to "yowie".

Ah, that totally makes sense, then. Accents make all the difference in the world!
