....That's not how it's pronounced?

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
(That's mentioned in the secret?)

[identity profile] netbug009.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Nono, I mean I thought it WAS pronounced like that, so the secret being all "That's not how you pronounce it!" confused me. %D;;;

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
different anon

lol, me too. How the hell is really supposed to be pronounced? I've always read it as "yowwee".

[identity profile] literaryspell.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Me, too. I thought I had this one right!

[identity profile] sandor051.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I always thought it was yow - e.

But people corrected that to yowwee.

[identity profile] frozenish.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I... do not know what the difference between those two pronunciations is, and also yeah what the hell is it if it's not "yowie"?
ext_1337990: (Default)

[identity profile] sandor051.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoops.

Meant to put the first as yay - oh.

Which to be fair sounds way less ridiculous.

[identity profile] frozenish.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah but if it were pronounced that way I would just think we were talking about cocaine.

[identity profile] stella-down.livejournal.com 2011-10-16 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
lmfao my thoughts exactly

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
that's what i always pronounced it as. everything i know is a lie.

[identity profile] mellow-dk.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Since no one else seems interested in doing this, the closest I can come to how it's supposed to sound (because I'm really kind of terrible at phonetics) is "yah-oh-ee".

[identity profile] aethre.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I got told off for pronouncing it that way once. I don't even know anymore!

[identity profile] mellow-dk.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
That's because people like to rub it in when they think they're right.

I had a kid correct my pronunciation on manga once, and I'm like, yeah, see I studied Japanese before you were born. I know you think you're educating the dumb adult, but really, I'm resisting the urge to pinch your cheek right now.

[identity profile] aethre.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Stuff like that is why I just call it comics irl. Because, screw it - I don't give a crap where the book with sequential pictures was made or the style it was drawn in, I just care about the story.

Also, it really pisses some people off and I kinda enjoy that.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-15 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure that's the "correct" pronunciation, which is pretty darn close to "yowie" as said by an English-speaking person. Ya-oh-ee vs. YOW-ie, but it's pretty close.

But the whole thing is a bit moot too since it's also a Japanese acronym, so it's not like it's a "real" word. It's like NASA or TARDIS or ... more actually, "HoYay" or "NaNoWriMo" etc.

[identity profile] mellow-dk.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, as far as most Americans can distinguish it's the same word. It just the first syllable should be "softer" (? maybe that's how I want to say it, again, not a linguist) then we usually say it. But to be fair, in LJ usage, we don't use yaoi to mean explicit gay porn like YAOI is, so I don't worry too much about it being an acronym.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-16 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
The correct pronuciation would be Yow (rhymes with now) -E (the name of the letter).

Idk how to pronounce "yowwie"; to me it looks like "yo-wee" but... yeah.

/foreign language and interpretation major; trilingual (includes japanese)

(Anonymous) 2011-10-16 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Except you don't emphasize the "w" sound. If anything, it's "yah-oh-ee" said really quickly.

With that being said, I doubt the average Japanese person gives a crap how Westerners pronounce certain words. It seems to be mostly weaboos who get offended when some words are said slightly wrong.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-16 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
Do people emphasize the "w" sound when saying "now"? I know I don't. I'd have to disagree that it's "yah-oh-ee" because even when you say that quickly, it simply does not blend together the way japanese words traditionally do.

But yeah, I agree with you on that one. Japanese people don't tend to give a fuck how the word is said; they seem happy enough that a foreigner would even try and speak japanese. That said, I want to be an interpreter, so prononciation is rather important, and if people aren't sure on how to say a word, I like to help them.
(also, just to be clear, I'm not a weeaboo; I speak english, spanish, japanese, and I'm working on farsi, indonesian, french, and mandrin, so... yeah).

(Anonymous) 2011-10-16 10:39 am (UTC)(link)
I guess it depends on the accent. "Yowie" is an Australian word and we emphasize the hell out of the "w". It's more like "Yow-wee".

I'd say yah-oh-ee is pronounced practically the same (with my Aussie accent), but with less emphasis on the "w" sound in the middle. Like, your lips don't come quite as close together when you say "yaoi" as opposed to "yowie".

(Anonymous) 2011-10-16 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, that totally makes sense, then. Accents make all the difference in the world!

[identity profile] yuppu.livejournal.com 2011-10-16 10:01 am (UTC)(link)
... I always read it as ya-o-ee, but then again I'm not an English native speaker |D
(though a Japanese guy I know reads it like this, so...)
