I agree! I like to pretend that didn't happen at all. It just made Molly seem so petty and small; she was foolish enough to believe a few sensationalist tabloid articles, and then in order to teach Hermione a thing or two, or to defend her kid, or whatever, she... gave Hermione a smaller chocolate egg than everyone else. How passive aggressive. If she was that concerned she should have asked Ron for the truth, instead she came off as gullible and mean.

I really don't get this. From like, book 1 Molly was always portrayed this way. Family was the only thing that mattered, hence things like the clock, and when she wasn't doing family she was listening to the housewifey programs on the radio, reading tabloids (wasn't she a fan of Witches' Weekly and some other thing), etc. which is exactly the type of woman that would believe Skeeter about her son/adopted son than the girl herself.

I know family is the only thing that truly matters to Molly, that she can be overprotective and is the stereotypical housewife in that she listens to a certain type of programme on the radio and reads a certain type of magazines/papers. That's not what I had a proplem with, in fact all of those things simply made me rather fond of Molly. My issue was with how ready she was to believe what she'd read in the tabloids.

I read the tabloids occasionally, but only as a form of morbid entertainment, I'd never really believe what was written there, and neither would anyone I know, not without some sort of proof or backup from a more reliable source, because tabloids are traditionally unreliable and Skeeter was obviously a tabloid writer. I'm not saying it's a bad thing if people do believe the tabloids, or that it makes someone a bad person. But I did lose a little respect for Molly when she bought into Skeeters articles so completely because she's a fictional character, so I can expect more from her than I would from a real person. But irregardless of that, even if Molly had been a real person and not a fictional character, I still would have called her out on believing the tabloids when she had connections to the people being written about. I know people here have argued in Molly's defence about the fact that she doesn't really know Hermione, etc. But that's not an excuse. She had already dismissed Skeeter as a liar earlier in the book, she had the means to discover the truth, but instead she bought into the sensationalist trip Skeeter was shovelling and behaved in a hurtful way to someone who didn't deserve it.

None of this is to say that I dislike Molly. I said before that I like to pretend it didn't happen because I do like her and want to continue liking her, but she behaved foolishly.
