While I find saying "never forgive" to be a tad strong, I'll put in that I found that scene very bitter and strangely OOC for Molly. I mean, maybe she'd act that way with an adult situation, but really, how old were the kids again when she did that?

Eh, Molly's not perfect and I do think that it was out of line, but from her POV, it was the girl who her son had a crush on, flirting around with her foster-ish son and someone else. I could see her being upset on Ron and Harry's behalf.

I agree! I like to pretend that didn't happen at all. It just made Molly seem so petty and small; she was foolish enough to believe a few sensationalist tabloid articles, and then in order to teach Hermione a thing or two, or to defend her kid, or whatever, she... gave Hermione a smaller chocolate egg than everyone else. How passive aggressive. If she was that concerned she should have asked Ron for the truth, instead she came off as gullible and mean.

TBH, that irritated the hell out of me, too. Yeah, I get that she was looking out for her son, but that's no reason for her to be stupid. She knew that Rita Skeeter was a lying bint, and yet she not only listened to her-- without proof of any kind!-- but she took it out on a fourteen year old girl. Honestly, I think that speaks a lot about her character. To me it proved that she was judgmental, illogical, immature, and just plain ridiculous. My opinion of Molly Weasley was never very high-- I have issues with her whole "let's send my child a howler every time he does something bad because that's sure to fix things!" approach-- but book 4 made my opinion of her drop substantially.

It's not Molly's best moment, to be sure, but I still love her. She was totally the kind of person who buys into what she reads in a magazine (see also: how obsessed she was with Gilderoy Lockheart), so it makes sense that she'd eat up what Rita Skeeter wrote. Also she is fiercely protective of what she considers to be her family, and Harry falls into that category since he doesn't have a living mother of his own.

Hee! It was a minor thing, but it represented some pretty questionable stuff. I like her, but that made me mad, as did the way she treated her husband sometimes. I know they really loved each other, but imagine if he talked to her like that.

[identity profile] mskye.livejournal.com 2011-10-20 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, adults can be petty too. Even the good guys. I love that Molly had some flaws to flesh out her character. She's still fucking awesome, and I'm sure that she's given Hermione tons of sweets since then.

[identity profile] philstar22.livejournal.com 2011-10-20 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
What I'll never forgive her for is how she treated Sirius, in his own home no less. But this was pretty bad too.

I didn't like that either, but I appreciate that Rowling didn't try to write Molly as perfect. Harry adores her as a surrogate mother of sorts, but we the readers get to see that she still isn't perfect.

I admit, though, that I don't like how that and other details with the main characters acting like jerks go unacknowledged, just because they are the good guys. It's not even all the time, but it sometimes frustrates me how we see everything through Harry's eyes. I know, I know, that's how the series is, aimed at children and then young adults, no room for more without making huge doorstoppers, blah blah

I don't have any great dislike for Molly Weasley, but that bit with the Skeeter article did pretty much kill off any respect I might have had for her intelligence.

[identity profile] hoopyfroodyford.livejournal.com 2011-10-20 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that pissed me off, and I still feel bad for Hermione for that... at least Molly wasn't written to be perfect. She also annoyed me in OotP, with the way she acted towards Sirius, though that I thought was somewhat understandable... the egg thing was just petty.

[identity profile] meiko-matsui.livejournal.com 2011-10-20 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
That and the way she treated Sirius and Fleur always bothered me, but I can't bring myself to hate her for some reason. She is still a wonderful character and person. She loves her family unconditionally, and is a kind and compassionate woman. I can think of several other worse characters.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-20 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Really guys? This is Molly Weasley, quintessential housewife- follower of Witch Weekly and was in love with Lockhart! Family is number 1. So was it really so unexpected that she would a) listen to what Rita was saying 2) snub a girl who dared disrespect her 'son(s)'? It's not quite the same, but think about the old mother-in-law vs. wife deal. This is a variation

[identity profile] atlikarinca.livejournal.com 2011-10-20 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
lol if the worst thing a grown adult did to me as a teen was send me a small egg, not gonna lie, I would find it within me to forgive them.

I thought it was more making a point about how terrible Rita was than Molly, anyway. Look at how much damage she's spreading with her brutal lies! etc etc.

[identity profile] robintheshrew.livejournal.com 2011-10-20 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
Well she could definitely be a bitch, but still....

[identity profile] angary.livejournal.com 2011-10-20 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
No, not bitter. There are a couple other characters (in HP and other canons) whom I can't forgive, some of them for even doing one action. As much as I love Molly, I can understand why that still bothers you. It was really messed up; I felt so bad for poor Hermione.

TBH I really don't like Molly but it was really a combination of things about her which rubbed me the wrong way. I mean sometimes you can seperate a good character to a character you'd like in real life but I keep imagining how I would feel when she humiliates her kids or sticks her nose in where it doesn't belong and it just really grates on my nerves.

She's just not someone I'd want as a mother or mother-in-law at all for example. I mean Harry likes her- but anyone compared to the Dursely's is going to look good and Molly just makes me grateful for my own mother, even when we both have our moments, because she's not Molly. There are worse people to have that sort of relationship with (like, as much as I like her as a character- Nanny Ogg from Pratchett, who treated daughters in law terribly) but I'm not sure I could deal with her level of intrusion and humiliation tactics unless say it was Bill or Charlie you married into the family with (since they have a suitable level of distance from her most of the time). Or if I was a Weasley kid, I moved away as soon as Hogwarts was finished. I mean I guess if I was her child on some level I might love her (I guess, though no guarantees there), but I wouldn't like her very much. She would drive me absolutely insane after getting away for her at months of a time if I didn't get that escape. It would probably get to the level where I'd only be able to go back to the burrow for special occasions (Christmas, Weddings, maybe birthdays) where I'd grin and bear it for the sake of peace and perhaps members of the family I actually got on with.

[identity profile] captain-emily.livejournal.com 2011-10-20 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I didn't really like Molly at all. She was overbearing, smothered her children, didn't have much control over half of them, didn't seem to do much to keep Percy from becoming the outcast, was a complete witch to Sirius when he was Harry's rightful guardian, and just didn't seem all that bright.

But I suppose I can respect her for being able to raise a happy(ish) family in poverty and for her sons turning out to be decent people. Still, she is nowhere near my favorite character.

[identity profile] gummi-sours.livejournal.com 2011-10-21 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Considering she knew damn well that Rita Skeeter had printed lies about her own husband just earlier that year, yeah, I don't think you ought to feel bad blasting Molly for swallowing that crap story about Hermione. Molly's not exactly the brightest (or kindest) gnome in the garden.
