I always thought it was funny... like getting less dessert because you'd been bad. You still got dessert though.

She shouldn't have sent her anything, then. I'd find it less humiliating to receive nothing than something set out to make me feel insignificant. Look at Harry. I think he would prefer to receive nothing than the demeaning gifts the Dursleys sometimes give him (ex, his first Christmas at Hogwarts).

I don't know how you thought it was funny, tbh. I always thought it cruel. At 14 I would have felt miserable if one of my best friend's parents sent me something insulting because they believed something about me from an unreliable source.

Am I the only one who thinks that Molly, a grown woman, acting so cruelly towards a fourteen year old girl is just not okay?

Y'know, I always found it odd that the Dursleys sent Harry anything at all. They struck me as the kind who'd never given him anything but Dudley's hand me downs, and yet they sent him money (if I recall correctly) for his first Christmas away?

Hell, I'd figure they'd give him an even bigger dose of nothing for Christmas considering they'd have to fork the gift over to a Hogwarts Owl to begin with!

Ok, wow. I totally forgot about them sending him 50p for that first Christmas. I was under the impression they gave him a tiny bit of money and something like a paperclip or a sock. I really need to re-read the series if I can't even remember info like that. Jeez.

Anyway, I agree. My knowledge of certain canon facts is a bit blurry, so do forgive me if I promote incorrect information, but it might have been remnant fear of persecution after Harry's living conditions were acknowledged by the Wizarding World. There's also been some speculation on certain HP threads that Hedwig might have pestered the Dursleys into giving him something (assuming Hedwig was the one who retrieved the Dursley's gifts) since it's unlikely that Harry had sent Hedwig over there himself.

It is very odd, though.

They sent him several gifts, if I recall correctly, among them 50p, a hanger, and tissues. Harry actually ended up putting most of them to some use. I think he gave the hanger to Ron because Ron had never seen one before or something.

Not in the slightest. I find it very cruel of her to do that to a kid, however "credible" Rita's article seemed. There's no excuse for trying to humiliate a fourteen year old girl like that.

She didn't do anything bad through. It's was all false rumors created by Rita Skeeter Molly just assumed them correct without bothering to ask any of the kids about it. No, she didn't have to send her anything but that still gives her the right to be rude though.

What's extra strange is the first person we hear saying that Rita Skeeter is a liar is Molly, after Rita implies that Arthur was incompetent at the World Cup security. So she knows Rita's a bad journalist after her husband gets badmouthed in the Prophet, but then suddenly takes her word for it the moment Rita attacks Hermione, who's stayed in her home? What the what?
