Eh, Molly's not perfect and I do think that it was out of line, but from her POV, it was the girl who her son had a crush on, flirting around with her foster-ish son and someone else. I could see her being upset on Ron and Harry's behalf.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-10-19 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
IA. I'd be annoyed with her, for sure. But at the same time, here's the stories about a friend of her youngest son's, and her essentially 'adopted' son, two-timing people.

Yeah, it's a low blow, but Molly's alwasy been protective of 'hers', and while we see Hermione all the time (school year, and so on), how often does Molly get to interact with her before this?

[identity profile] sindragosa.livejournal.com 2011-10-20 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
how often does Molly get to interact with her before this?

But on that note, doesn't it sound like Molly overreacting about a girl she doesn't know much about? I'm not trying to bash Molly, a flaw is a flaw, but it's still not very nice to do that to someone you hardly know and "found out their 'true' colors" through a Rita Skeeter clipping...

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-10-20 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
That is also true. I guess what I meant was that, all Molly had to go on was what her son (and Harry) said, she never had a chance to get to know Hermione, and know how absurd that is. I'm not trying to say she was in the right for this, but I can see how she wouldn't know how to take Rita Skeeter's report.

Plus there's the way Ron and Harry weren't properly talking during bits of GoF (though I can't really remember when that happens, so please forgive me if my memory of the timing is off), but if she heard that when Harry and Ron weren't talking, and if she heard that Ron was upset with Harry, and that Harry and Hermione were supposedly flirting, I'd see that as A Bad Thing.

Though, again, I can't remember if the timeline of GoF makes this a possibility. ^^;

When was the egg giving? Ron forgave Harry just after the first task with the dragons, when he saw how dangerous the tournament really was.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-10-20 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I honestly don't remember, it's been a while since I read and/or saw GoF, so I don't know. :(

[identity profile] alice-alaizabel.livejournal.com 2011-10-20 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
It was an easter egg, so sometime in the spring (not sure when easter was that year)

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-10-20 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Now we just need to figure out when the first trial was... >_>

Though I'm seriously not sure if my idea has any merit or not. :)

[identity profile] alice-alaizabel.livejournal.com 2011-10-20 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
First Task was on the 24th of November, Second was on the 24th of February, Easter was in April, and then the Third Task (a day or so before being when Molly learned that Hermione wasn't messing Ron and Harry around and was embarassed) was on the 24th of June.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-20 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
So, still on the "giving Molly the benefit of doubt" train of thought, we could assume that, thanks to Ron's poor letter sending habits, Molly hadn't kept up properly with the news of the state of the trio's friendship and only really had Skeeter's article to go by.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-20 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, considering Molly also believed everything Rita Skeeter wrote about HARRY, even though she knew him pretty well at that point, the whole issue was that Molly was very susceptible to the press. A lot of people were, apparently.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-10-20 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks. Theory- BUSTED. :D

(Unless her son's really just don't talk to her during the school year, lol, but that's reaching.) <3

(Anonymous) 2011-10-20 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
I believe that might be the case. I can totally see Ron sitting down to write:

"Dear Mum, how are you? I've been having a good time this year at Hogwarts."

*thinks what else to write*

"Quidditch was cancelled! And I had been training so hard to make the team."

*thinks some more*

"Classes are getting harder, too. Yes, Mum, I am doing my homework!"

*thinks some more*

"Love you lots,

-Ron"

...Yeah, that should be enough! *sends letter*

He just doesn't strike me as the sort to keep his parents well informed through the year. XD

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-10-20 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
That... Actually makes a lot of sense. :D

And then Percy's graduated by now, right? So I doubt he'd be able to write his Mum about what happened. But then Fred and George are there, so... Nah, they woudn't write either.

But Ginny's also there, right? What does she do in the forth book again? O.o

[identity profile] alice-alaizabel.livejournal.com 2011-10-20 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Ginny doesn't have much interaction with the Trio until OotP really.

I agree that I doubt the Weasley boys (and probably Ginny to a lesser extent) are great letter writers. I've seen several fanfics where Harry is astonished by how little Ron writes home, because if he had a home to write to, he'd do it as often as possible. But with the Weasleys, it probably feels like there's no need to write unless there's something to tell. This was before Voldemort rose again, so it's not like he was worried for their safety or anything. Especially Ron would just get caught up in the regular dramas of school life, and the massive dramas that come with being best friends with Harry. I know that when I was a kid going away on week/fortnight long school trips, writing home always seemed like a chore, because I'd think, "Well, I'm going to see them soon and I can tell them all about it when I get back." It felt like homework.

Wow, that got long.

Also, I'm not sure Ron even noticed about the egg. I know Harry did (else the readers wouldn't have been told) but I'm fairly certain Ron just breezed past it with all the unintentional callousness of a fifteen-year-old boy.

Right, thank you!

...Wow, I really need to re-read the earlier books, don't I? :D (read 1, and 7 recently, but not 2-6).

It got long, but it was awesome, and explained everything way better than I ever could. :)

but I'm fairly certain Ron just breezed past it with all the unintentional callousness of a fifteen-year-old boy.

THIS. Why don't people realize that nobody's perfect, teens less so because they haven't had as much pracise? >_>

[identity profile] alice-alaizabel.livejournal.com 2011-10-20 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
Completely. I mean, even the nicest of teenagers can be really horrible, even if they don't mean to; being really self-involved is just part and parcel of adolescence. Your own problems, petty as they might seem to someone with more maturity, are just these huge tragedies. You're too busy dealing with your own drama, that quite often you're oblivious to everyone else's, and I think Ron was very much like that, in a way Harry wasn't because of the way he grew up, and Hermione wasn't because she was just a lot more mature.

I--

Okay I don't know, you stumped me with Ginny. Hmm, I imagine she would still be struggling a little to be her own person and find herself. She was in third year in that book, right? So she suddenly has at least two more classes to struggle with, and she's probably trying to interact more with others and make friends after the fiasco with the Chamber of Secrets that most likely alienated her in her first year.

If she writes, it's probably to complain about Ron and the twins. XD I also imagine that she was trying to distance herself a little from her crush on Harry, you know, just being there if he ever needed her, but not shadowing his every move, so she probably didn't know much besides "Ron is being a prat to Harry" and "Ron is not being a prat to Harry anymore", and she might have missed everything in the trio more elaborated than that.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2011-10-20 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
That makes a lot of sense, actually. Especially because in five I got the feeling that Ginny *had* made her own friends, which could have happened the year before.

Yeah, that's pretty funny, actually. Plus, since she's not with the trio yet, you're right- would she really know the group dynamics that well?

The other problem, though, is the timing. If the above timeline is correct, and the first task (wherein Ron forgave Harry) was on November 24th, and April was in Easter, what happened during the Christmas holiday? /can't remember that either. (Did Ron and Harry stay at Hogwarts that year?) O_o

(Anonymous) 2011-10-20 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I got the feeling that Ginny already had friends her own age, but we didn't get to see them because they weren't relevant to the main story.

I have no idea either. o_o I really need to pick up the books again.

Molly had no right at all to judge her for flirting! Just because Ron had a crush on her doesn't mean H. has to keep away from other boys, she wasn't Ron's girlfriend at that point. For your information, shit like that is why people like me bash Molly.

Apart from that, Molly isn't her mother, so i don't understand why she even did it. If i had kids and i would disapprove of the behavior of one of their friends, it's certainly not my business to parent that friend. That's her own parent's job! And she didn't even have the decency to talk to her, like the adult she was, no, she just made a 15 year old feel bad. If someone has the gall to parent other people's kids, at least be mature about it and don't act the same age as the kid.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-20 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, so i misread that Hermione flirted with boys other than Ron and Harry, my bad. Forget my comment above, apparantly doesn't really apply. (Apart from the bashing, that still applies).

(Anonymous) 2011-10-20 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
That was Molly's flaw, in my opinion: she tried to be a mother to everyone, even when they didn't need her or wanted her.

[identity profile] inuyatta.livejournal.com 2011-10-20 09:56 am (UTC)(link)
...Actually, I thought Molly was upset on Harry's behalf. She feels that Harry has suffered so much as it is, so the idea that Hermione was adding heartbreak on top of it really got to her--but as she was Ron's friend, she decided that she should send SOMETHING at least. So she compromised with a tiny egg.

Not saying that she was totally right in the matter, but it's something I've forgiven her for, since where I'm from, it's not regular custom to send gifts to friends of your children...so I just always felt Mrs. Weasley was exceptionally nice and generous despite being poor.
