TBH, that irritated the hell out of me, too. Yeah, I get that she was looking out for her son, but that's no reason for her to be stupid. She knew that Rita Skeeter was a lying bint, and yet she not only listened to her-- without proof of any kind!-- but she took it out on a fourteen year old girl. Honestly, I think that speaks a lot about her character. To me it proved that she was judgmental, illogical, immature, and just plain ridiculous. My opinion of Molly Weasley was never very high-- I have issues with her whole "let's send my child a howler every time he does something bad because that's sure to fix things!" approach-- but book 4 made my opinion of her drop substantially.

er, unofficially adopted son, I mean.

Blech, yeah, the Howlers. Nothing like sending public humiliation through the mail to the kid with the inferiority complex.

I go back and forth on her as a character, but she certainly has her bad traits, which Harry sweeps under the rug of "but she's a good mom" (also questionable).

Ugh, yes. Either she didn't know just how insecure Ron already was, which speaks a lot about her as a parent (and sorry, but i can't quite bring myself to excuse her for this simply because she has a lot of kids), or she knew and sent it anyway, which makes her an even more questionable parent. Either way, it doesn't bode well for her.

And *snorts*. Harry's hardly the best person to look to when you want an unbiased opinion of proper parenting. Not to say that he's totally ignorant, but that with the way he was raised-- or who he was raised by, rather-- anyone who was kinder than Petunia Dursley would be considered the world's greatest mum. Compared to Petunia, Molly was a saint.

I don't like her much at all, but she's had moments where I couldn't help but find her decent, if not somewhat likable.

The one that always kind of got me is how little reign she has over the twins. I'm not talking about their pranks, though that's not great, but how brutally they tend to rip into Percy and Ron. Bill and Charlie are the cool older brothers and Ginny's the girl, but they team up against the brothers on either side of them and neither Molly nor Arthur really seem to stop it; they even occasionally laugh along when it's about Percy.

Plus you do have to wonder when the two oldest kids leave the country as soon as they graduate. Not saying that all people who live far away from home had bad home lives (I'm at college across the country from my parents), but Bill and Charlie only really come home when they absolutely need to. I could just see them both wanting to break out as soon as they got the chance, seeing life outside the Weasley huddle. Percy did too, just not in quite as nice a way.

I kind of found the disfunctionality fun, in a "this is so awful you have to laugh". I grew up in a family of 6+ kids and it is frustrating on the parents as well as almost impossible to keep tabs on what each child is doing. So the parents tend to get laxer as the kids go down the line. Molly was never very happy with her husband anyway. I got the feel that their marriage soured somewhere along the line and Molly put all her love into Percy instead.

Plus you do have to wonder when the two oldest kids leave the country as soon as they graduate.

I always thought that it was really interesting, though, that Ron thinks nothing of owling his brother in Romania to take care of a problem. Obviously, there's some level of interdependence and affection between all of them.

Interesting, some views I hadn't come across before. Plus I just have one sibling, so I don't really know the logisitcs of bigger families.

I can definitely see the point about Ron and Charlie; communication brings them pretty close. It's an interesting thing in HP, bringing the whole family to Egypt for vacation is a cool little treat, but the possibility of leaving the country in the middle of a war is only mentioned once or twice in passing. With how easy Apparation is and how few wizards there are, you'd think that practically all of wizarding England would evacuate.

I'm not sure I agree with you on the Molly/Arthur part, although I can see some of it. I still viewed them as a fairly loving couple, but that might be rosy glasses. But I do agree that Molly had her fair share of frustrations with Arthur's lack of drive and seriousness, so she put her expectations and hopes on Percy. Bill and Charlie were successful, but not in the obvious, high-class sort of way that Arthur could have been. When Arthur gets promoted in Book 6, it rings very familiar to Molly bragging about Percy being Prefect/Head Boy/in the Ministry. So I wouldn't say she put all her love on Percy, but maybe all of her esteem.

Adding to the Molly/Arthur part, I doubt that if they'd grown disenchanted with the relationship/one another, he'd still call her "Mollywobbles" :)
