Hah, and I think many people in canon would argue the opposite if they figured they could get away with it. XD I'm not the biggest Carrot fan in the world, but I don't think it's necessarily about one deserving the other but the fact that they love each other.

Pretty much this. I don't see them as incredibly compatible but they seem to, so... hey, whatever works.

(I like Carrot, but if I had to pick one of them, well, easy choice.)

I think that's a bit of a theme in Pratchett's books. All these people who oughtn't be compatible that manage to make it work anyway.

I like Carrot in bits and pieces and in certain doses. I certainly like him as a minor character and as a foil to the other characters, but he's a bit too eerily in control for my tastes to be a main character. So I suppose it's fortunate for me that Vimes took on that role quite neatly. XD

I thought that was the point of his character: he is calculating and in control in a way, and would make a horrific, but effective, king if he was king. So it's good he's not! Vetinari is sort of better.

Yep, I think it grew to be a big part of his character and it's certainly intentional! I was just thinking way back to Guards! Guards! when he was intended to be the main character. I think he works perfectly where he is now. I think he's supposed to be a bit eerie to us as readers even though he's one of the good guys. He has a ton of really great side stories.

I'm starting to see a story where he winds up in a position of power, and Angua is put into a position of 'well, what're you gonna do about it' and that's kinda cool.

She would be so in position to go up against a big bag who though he was a good guy. Or even a guy who is kinda in the right but the bad guy deserves a say too.

Intellectually, I know that Carrot will eventually rise to power, but I can't seem to wrap my head around it. Personally, I think it'd be awesome if it was Angua who rose to power underneath the rationale that anyone as powerful as Carrot shouldn't be in power (with the agreement of Carrot, perhaps), but I know that's pretty unlikely. Certainly an idea for a fic!

Though for that to happen, Vimes would have to no longer be the Commander, which I wouldn't be all that happy to read about. I recall reading one fic where he retired and immediately got to work making sure all kids had a chance for an education, and I don't think I'd mind that too much.

I'm of the opinion that Moist is the one who is being groomed to rise to power. :)

Carrot would probably be the next-gen Watch Commander, true, but if Moist were Patrician, the story would probably focus on Moist juggling the Guilds and city politics, rather than the City Watch. (And if it were a Moist story, I wouldn't mind the shift so much.)

Oh yes, I don't really think Carrot would get the power of becoming the Patrician, but being the Commander is power enough. The theory that Moist is next in line seems to be a popular one, but I haven't the foggiest idea of what I'd like to happen or what I think will happen. XD I've just finished Snuff today (no spoilers, don't worry!) and I have to say I'm pretty content with things as they are.
