I haven't played DMC in a long time, but they were fun games and for people who are huge fans of them I can totally understand their anger at having him redesigned into someone that looks absolutely nothing like the character they have come to know and love.

Like I said, I'm not even an enormous fan of the series, but I do like Dante and his attitude, and yes, his character design, and even to ME it doesn't make sense that he now looks like a completely different person.

And what others have said about him looking like a stereotypical American hero...well, I'm going to agree on that. I don't find him appealing visually at all. Different tastes and all, I know, and I even respect that...but seriously, judging someone because of this? Yea. Okay.

P.S. I too want to know what JRPG's you've been playing. Seriously, tell me what I've been missing out on all these years.

I'd even be okay with a physical redesign if that were the extent of it. I mean, I wouldn't like it at first, but I'd get okay with it and give it a chance. It's that the point of remaking him seems to have so much disdain for the humor and character of the original Dante that it just feels like a gigantic bout of point-missing, because that's the stuff that made him so well-loved in the first place. They already tried "let's turn Dante into a gritty, humorless dark hero" in DMC 2 and for most fans it's the low point of the series.

When they talk about "what's cool" having changed it's like...dude, the reason Dante's cool is that he does his own thing. It really does remind me of the crap the comics industry tried to pull in the 90s by updating characters and titles to be darker and edgier only to have it come out looking absurd or with the fans hating it.

All I knew was he was being redesigned visually, and while the look certainly hints (Or, lets be honest, screams) towards a change of attitude I wasn't aware they were putting down their previous attempts (Well, like I said, more than COMPLETELY CHANGING HIS APPEARANCE has already done) and changing his personality completely.

One of the things I liked about Dante was his humor and awareness of his sex appeal (not to mention overall badassness), and if he turns into some dark, broody action hero, then yea, I can see why you would be upset. It's pointless and probably going to lose them more fans than it gains them.

I can't help but think this game was a new IP at one point, but since Ninja Theory's games sell so miserably, they decided to stick the "Devil May Cry" name on it in an attempt to sell more copies. The fact that this Dante has nothing to do with the old Dante is a big tip off, IMO. He has a different personality, different looks and even a different past (apparently he's half an angel now. WTF)

Half angel? No. Just no. He was half demon before, why switch it? That is indeed very odd how they decided to change even that aspect of him. Before this thread I had no idea the redesign was so complete...I just figured they made him hideous but the rest would stay mostly the same. This is sad, even to me. :/

I sincerely hope that this wasn't actually a different IP at some point (simply because that's even worse, doing that to the fans), but...it wouldn't terribly surprise me after hearing all of this. Even if it wasn't...still, wtf you guys, don't shit on your fans!

Actually, apparently he's part angel, part demon and part human in the new game. I can't remember how the fuck that mechanic works, though it kind of sounds pulled out of their ass.
